has anyone had to change rotors yet?

The dealer told me that I needed to change my rotors due to some vib when i was stoping. I have just reached 20,000 miles is this normal or no? also does anyone have an idea of how much this should cost as in labor and parts.

vimzin,

i had to change my rotors at around 20k but that was after a number of track events and running some street/track pads.

Depends on your driving style. Ask them to measure your rotors and ask for specifications on rotor thickness. They are required to give that to you. Also what may have happened is you could have scored your rotors. I did that by accident as i didn't know my brake pads were almost worn out during a long track session (55 mins) and I came back in and my car was making a horrible noise. It turns out my brake pad had almost split in half and scored my rotor.

So anything can happen. What is your driving style?

Those symptons are commonly referred to as warped rotors, although the rotors themselves are almost never warped. Rather, whats most likely to have happened is that portions of your brake pad deposited onto the rotors causing the rotor surface to be somewhat uneven.

The solution is: new rotors, turning the rotors, or running race pads on the rotors for a limited time to "turn" the rotors using race pads. MB dealers never turn, they want to replace the rotors.

Luckily, the OE rotors for the C32 are quite affordable. I forget the exact price, but I had to get mine front rotors replaced earlier this year after a track event and the parts didn't cost much. I had an independent mechanic do the labor and I watched him change both the rotors and pads. The actual time to do both fronts was less than an hour, but I don't know what the customary shop time the dealer's service department will bill you for the procedure.

Does leaving rust on the rotors after a car wash lead to warped rotors?

no, that isnt really even rust, its the brake pad metallic matieral oxidixing with the water..it all gets brushed away after a couple stops.

Avoid the parking brake after hot lapping or using your rotors intensively.

So say I leave it on overnight after a wash. Nothing bad will come of it?

The deposits you refer to are called pad transfer, which typically only occurs on a new pad/rotor combination. Pad transfer goes away over time (depending on braking habits/conditions). At 20,000 miles, the rotors are thinner than they were when brand new, and are likewise more susceptible to warping.

At 22k, just had my third set of rotors installed yesterday (2nd replacement). I track my car quite a bit, so get alot of brake wear. OE rotors were shot by 7k. If you run your car on the track, when you pull off with hot brakes, avoid leaving your foot on the brake after you stop. It will bake some of the pad material on the rotors and will take 500 - 1000 mi. to wear off. When you stop, put your foot on the floor and leave it there!. Hard habit to break!. BTW, dealer cost for front rotors and pads - $630.
