I can't believe this....
although i do remember seeing a W202 on autotrader which had a W210 E55 engine swap and said c55...i don't think this is it. even worse i saw an R129 with "Sl55 AMG" badges and a BIG FERRARI SCUDERIA FIORANO HORSE EMBLEM

You'd be surprised... We're car enthusiasts, so obviously we know the real deals from the posers, but most of the people out there will think it's a real AMG because of the Badge...

I've thought of that before, but you know what my argument is with that? There are people who know what AMG is & those that don't. The one's that don't know what it is wont even look twice at the badge, but the people you're trying to fool into believing it's a real AMG know what AMG is & they would know that it's a fake, so why bother doing it?
EDIT: By the way, last weekend i saw an ML55 AMG, which was just a rebadged 430/320. It didn't have the body kit, rims, brakes or exhausts, just the badge. What a fool
I was in my wife's car so i couldn't show him a real AMG, maybe next time.

.....
I cannot tell it is and so as you cannot tell it is not.
So I use my logic thinking

W202 C55 is not very well known as today's W203 C55. So there is no point to pretend it is.
W202 C55 were sold as limited edition to a very limited few and are truly collectors' favourite chocie. So not surprise you see people keeping them.

In addition, there were a very small number of W202 C55s made for special customers overseas, but I don't know if any authentic ones have made it stateside.

I've seen this car for sale in a local website since I live in the Bay area too . Anyhow, it's a real 5.5L engine in there. It's not a C220 but it does have some beef under that hood. Here's the ad for it.

So that settles it. Still, I wouldn't pay that asking price for it since I never liked the interior of the W202's.
Nevertheless, I am positive that some people in the states retrofitted the e55 w210 engine into the c43 vehicle. RENNtech had at least one of these. I almost bought it.
The most likely scenario is that it is a c43 rebadged to keep up with the times, but there is that outside chance that they did the engine swap. I think there is virtually zero chance that it was a euro c55 unless they got major permission from the EPA and USDOT a la Porsche 959.
I hope this helps. This is why they had to put the w209 clk front end on the w203 c55, to meet us and most likely eu4 crash standards.
