Steering Dampener

just for everyone's 411: Replaced the steering dampener the other day. It's a ten minute job. You'll need to jack up car, on both sides, and two 16mm wrenches - one ratchet and one box-end will suffice. The steering dampener itself can be compressed by hand, and it costs $23 dollars through www.autohausaz.com

It tightened it up, I've been driving around town mostly as of late, I'm sure the difference will be greater once on the highway.

All the previous model V8 5 Series had recirculating ball steering (ie a steering box) as they couldn't fit a rack in the space available

WOuld it not work because there is no room? I figured getting rid of the box would free up room... and if its in the 210 why would it not work in the 202? Shouldn't it be plug and play? Lastly how would you get two shocks to work in the place of one? Cheers.

CLK Cabrio
hey guys i have a clk430, and was wondering if there is a way to get a stiffer or heavier dampener. and if so do you think this would give the car better steering response.

thanks
and happy new years everyone!

There is NO rack and pinion setup in the W210 E55 or W208 Clk55, they have recirculating ball also.

The W210 E-Class (including the E55) is rack and pinion. The rack is bolted the the rear of the front subframe.

The W208 CLK is based on the W202, therefore like the W202 it has recirculating ball steering. The steering box is attached to the left side longitudinal frame member.

It would be an extremely difficult project to fit the W210 rack to the W202. The W202 does not have the subframe that the W210 has.

While a lot of W210 stuff is common to the W202 (and other M-B also), the rack is not one of them.
