So this has been going on for a good while. I haven't removed the wheels or any parts yet to look around but I know its there and I know when it happens.
When the car is at a standstill and I give it a good stab maybe 1/3-3/4 throttle to get going I hear an initial grunting type rubbing sound for about 1 second as the car gets moving. If I take off slowly it doesn't happen. You can easitly hear and barely feel it. Somthing is defenitly hitting, rubbing, twisting, or such. A second after the car is rolling the noise is gone. Only when starting from a standstill.
If any of you guys are old, it is just like that splitsecond "urrraummphhh" as you get up from a chair and get moving.
I've driven around my garage turing at low speeds up and down the ramps and I can't get the noise once in motion.
Any front end parts that show this sign when they wear out? I would think I would hear it all the time which has me stumped.

lol funny, i had same sound coming from rear driver side, from suspension..
well i got it checked and it was only ice from when i washed car that got stuck inside door, and in car..so it rub every time i drive and made kwick kwick kwick..i was very scary it was so loud, took all the ice out..and problem fix..cost 0$ and 30 sec lol
car is perfect..doubt it woulda been ball joints , shims or even suspension.
hope its as easy for you bro!

Your suspension is definitely going to load up when you take off from a stand still, a good bit more than it would when you are already moving. I would imagine your best bet is going to involve taking the rear wheels off and looking for contact points.

Have you replaced the engine mounts as of late, they could be on their way out of town...

I replaced the engine mounts this summer, I thought the engine was moving more than normal so I replaced them. However, the ones I replaced were in perfect shape. I still used the new one's at that point. On the dyno this summer I did notice that these motors move ALOT. The motor dips heavily to one side under acceleration and then once you let up the motor dose a whiplash shake back to it's nuetral position. Originally Posted by StapleGun

You guys think that the torque needed to get the car rolling from a stop could torque the engine to one side enough to maybe be rubbing against something? This also happens when the tires don't break lose and grip so maybe everything upstream of the tires gets subjected to too much twist? If I spin the tires from a standstill it doesn't do this also which makes me think of the above idea.
Gonna look around the engine bay for scuffs and such today.
My W210 is lowered quite a bit (H&R Cupkit) and under heavy acceleration the rear tire will rub ever so slightly on the fender lip. It makes a sound similar to what you describe for only a 1/2 second or so. If I spin the tires the car doesn't squat as hard in the rear and I don't hear the noise. The tires barely show any indication of rubbing but I stuck a piece of tape on the lip and I can see the rubbing on it when I removed it. Don't know if this is your problem or not but it might be worth a look.

I had the same problem on my drivers side rear. When I rolled the rear drivers side fender ,that took care of the problem. No more rubbing back there. I only have a problem with the drivers side front fender now. Need to roll it a little more.

Tranny mounts? Rear diff mounts?

Rear diff mounts! Nope! See E36 BMW's with that problem! Not a problem in these cars.Originally Posted by Militant-Grunt

The sound is comming from the front end from what I can tell. The front end lifts under acceleration so I don't see how the fronts could rub. Under corners it would make sense. I haven't checked the inside edge but the outside edge of the fronts is not scuffed at all.
It could be the rear but I've had the rear rub in the past(which I fixed) and the noise was noticably at the rear. I wonder if its the inside edge of one of the tires front or rear. The sound dose seem like it comes from the front section.
Anyone know the syptoms of a worn tranny mount maybe?
??
THanks for the replys
