Why does my BAS/ESP light up randomly?
Hi guys, I had to change my breaklight switch and cleared the code on my C43 a few months ago, the replacement part turned out to be no good so a few days later the warning lights of BAS/ESP/ABS illuminated again, so I bought a new one and my mechanic installed it and cleared the code, after the part was changed everything was okey. After a few weeks only BAS/ESP illuminated again, now on and off this warning light illuminates when it feels like to annoy me randomly. It goes away when I restart the car, but it has an error code registered in the databox.
What's the problem here, why does it come back on my cluster?
I never had this problem before this factory fitted breaklight switch broke.
Does anybody know?

This happens in my ML55 when the brake pads are getting low, check the meat on the brake pads, when the sensor just starts getting nicked it doesn't trip the brake wear sensor but the bas / esp.
The other possibility could also be the esp module which is prone to failure (also replaced on my 55)

If only BAS / ESP lights shows up and goes away when you restart car..then shows up again lil after..it's probably your BRAKE booster to change, usualy it's the brake booster sensor that fails and cant replace it..have to change the whole piece, happen to me 2 weeks ago, changed whole piece and works perfectly! ( retail price goes for 900$ ) got it off ebay for 175$ shipped lol =)
good luck !

First rule out a low battery or low alternator voltage output.
The indicators are voltage sensitive and a weak battery can have similar symptoms.

You can reset the ABS/ESP lights by turning the steering wheel full lock left and then full lock right and then back to center, with the engine running.
That will ususally reset the system, most of the time. However, I have the light remain on after this and I had to then turn off the motor and restart which would then remove the lights.

If a reset is going to clear his problem no need to wait for several hours with the battery disconnected.Just disconnect the neg. lead with the key out of the ignition and step on the brake pedal for 30 seconds to remove any residule charge in the system. Then hook the neg. up again,Start the car turn the steering wheel lock to lock and back a few times to center the steering wheel angle sensor and sync your windows and sun roof and enter your radio code.
If that clears his problem great
If not an intermittent set of warnings like that is not going to be triggered by the turning the steering wheel left to right and back.It only loses it's settings when the battery is dead or unhooked.
OP are your brakes all good?(plenty of pad?)
Try going to a coin car wash or if you have a low power pressure washer and power wash the whole brake area rotors all sides, calipers, down at the pads.
Not full force but stronger then a hose nozzle.
Then roll it onto a bunch of newspaper under each wheel and spray some brake cleaner onto the brake area(avoid painted calipers.
Let air dry for 1/2 hour and then go slowly for a ride applying the brakes gently to remove any water that may have not evaporated.Dirt and brake dust sometimes foul the sensors and cause your on again off again problems.
Worth a try before you do the brake booster since that is a rare cause for your problem.

Did not mean to imply it would not work
just that no need to wait several hours,if a reset is going to work you can do it in a few minutes the above method and that way if it does not work in his case he can use the extra hours saved trying to locate the problem.

Hey buds thanks for your replies.
My pads are not worn so they can be ruled out.
My bas/esp light doesn't come on all the time it comes on maybe once in a week or once in 2 weeks, this is not often happening.
I had my battery charged recently so it's full with juice.
But I havent locked my steering column from left to right to exclude the warning light, so I have to try this procedure.
Thanks for your help.

SLK 320
HI Folks,
I was reading the post about the BAS/ESP light, thanks for all the info.
I have a 2001 SLK 320 with this light coming on randomly.
We've already checked the alternator, and battery, and we've tried turning the wheel back and forth and light still comes back on.
We're leaning towards the faulty brake light switch, but we were wondering if you had any more advice. Thanks in advance for all you help.
Melissa

have they bled the brakes and or checked fluid level?
Tried a battery reset by disconnecting the negative lead per the above thread? You do the steering wheel angle sensor reset after the battery reset.
Checked the brake light sockets for corrosion or loose fittings?
What voltage was your alternator putting out?
Change the brake switch,mb part only not aftermarket.

same here for me it have not comin back for a month now, so i guess it's in place now after several random lite up's.
btw it's not a Mb part it's a aftermarket part so i guess it's why i had some truble with it.

hey all,
just to add one more data point to this common problem.
My BAS/ESP light was going on and off periodically, maybe only 1-2 times per week at first, then it was coming on every time i drove the car. It turned out to be the Brake Light switch. once that was replaced no more lights.
my car had about 88,000 miles when this happened. the light had come on very randomly and then go away for the last 5,000 miles probably, but not long enough to cause any worry.
