C36 after 100K..

Ok I bought my 95 C36 when it had 80k miles. At idle it had a diesal like sound. I found out that this noise was normal. Well after when the water pump was replaced(was leaking). The engine got smooth without any noises. The cars been using Castrol synthetic since purchased. Changed every 4500miles. This is weird with the new water pump the car seems faster and smoother. Currently have 105,xxx miles maybe the engine just broken in

same deal with my M113 E43 water pump - after I changed it, engine sounds like a purring Benzie.

my 190DT just started calming down and feeling more potent at 290K miles, so yes - that M104 should just be breaking in about now!

Did you DIY the water pump? Or did you get someone to replace it for you? If so, how much did it cost, because my 230 is sounding like them diesel trucks too now...

The independent Benz shop did it. Cost for new pump, flush coolant, new thermostat was close to $600. I know the guy and it took him couple hrs. If your water pump is not leaking don't change it.

Cast Iron blocks just start to get into their prime at around 100k. That block can handle 300k+ easy so your motor is just getting started. Over time certain engines can even begin to perform better as they "loosen up", C36 is definitely one of those type of motors. As long as you do basic maintenance and replace head gasket / wiring harness... that motor should last the life of the car no matter how long you keep it.

All the gaskets were done by the previous owner and I did the wireharne$$. The car has no rust. What about the Clk55 motor? Which have alum block.

Don't worry about your M113 block wearing out. An aluminum block with aluminum heads mean the head gasket will last longer. For those that don't know, aluminum expands and contracts over 50% faster than iron. With an iron block and aluminum head, each engine heat cycle results in the head gasket being scrubbed a little. Also, the M113 cylinders are Alusil. Alusil cylinders can be damaged by using crap for oil or by ingesting something hard (either of which will kill any cylinder), but normal wear usually is not a problem. Your M113 block will last at very long time.

'97 c36 amg
Hey guys, so i am looking at buying a '95 c36amg with about 130k for $6880. Carfax shows no previous red flags about the car. What should I be looking for on a c36 when walking around the car and engine etc. Also in this market does that price sound a little high to you?

Would greatly appreciate any replys, and/or buying tips

i just picked my 96 c36 up with 180k clean as f*** for 5500. make sure it has the right crossover intake pipe because i later found out mine came off of a c230 or 280 not the larger one its supposed to have with 3.6 imprinted on it. I would try to bring him down a little. goodluck!

fwiw, highest mileage car with a M113 I've come across so far was a '02 S500. Still ran perfect.

Don't fully understand this.

Are you saying your 'diesel' valvetrain noise went away after you replaced the water pump feeding off the serpentine belt?
