C36 Front Brakes
can I see pics of your c36 front brakes?
mine is equipped with ate single piston calipers, using A0044200220 pads; these look like regular w202 brakes. clearly not the 4-piston calipers from the then-SL600. both mb-usa and the local mb dealer have given me the brush-off when BOTH their technical databases show I'm supposed to have the 4-piston. the local mb dealer guy was even a mechanic b4 he moved to service manager, and while talking, did not seem as knowledgeable as he thinks he is. i've seen those 4-piston calipers on a black 95 c36 just once, but i've yet to see anything like mine. so i'd like to have more confirmations b4 i proceed any further.

the powdercoated C43 front brakes looks similar to what i have, just a tiny little different. the spring clip is on top/across the caliper instead of below the caliper. i am surprised his is not the sl600 brakes either (i wonder if he knows).
i was more expecting this in my car..

1995 C 36 AMG; 1992 W124 300E (M103 Ex Mosselman TT KIT) was 320hp @10psi now stock :(
early 36s had the ate AMG 4 pistons, 43s have larger single piston brakes. bu dunno if late 36s had something like the 43. thats what i know abt it.
Also heard that some early 36s had special rotors and calipers that are very expensive so hope more info shows up in this thread.
mine has like the AMG in the pic above but painted red, even the rears are red.

The '95's had the AMG brakes that look similiar to the pic above in blue. The '96 and '97's had the SL600 4 Piston front brakes, and E420 rear brakes Just like those in Silver above.

ok but then that means the ones in blue are larger and the more rare and expensive ones.
That must be for a reason, i would say they perform better.
Not that the 4 piston ones are any weak ones but u get the point.

i believe it's supposed to be 12.6 inches. i have no idea what size i have on mine until i get back to sf and take off the wheel to measure.

Yeah the SL600 front rotors are 12.6 inch up front and 10.9 inches in the rear. Braking power on the C43 is 2 feet better then the C36 keeping in mind the C43 is LIGHTER then the C36 by 89 pounds.

iirc, those 4-caliper ones from sl600 should be steel units rather than aluminum.. that makes them pretty darn heavy and increases unsprung weight. but the single caliper probably has more flex..

95 feet? From 60 MPH? Are you sure? The reason I ask is I've never seen a street car that stops from 60 MPH in less than 100 feet. A Ferrari Enzo takes 109 feet to stop from 60. Better braking than an Enzo?

I can attest that the calipers are heavy as I have a set from a 96 C36 that are about to get transplanted to my C280. The calipers for the 95 C36 are the same as the 96/97 units in the sense that they are the SL600 units. The 95 differs in that it was modified to accomodate larger rotors that were specific to the 95 year model. I have a copy of the technical bulletin on the 95 C36 and it specifies the clearencing of the calipers and hose connection modification of the SL600 units. Steve S I live in San Fran myself and have a 96 C36 so let me know if you would like to check out the brake in person.

I remember when i had my C230 Kompressor 99' , my mecanic had a C43 99' he bought brand new ( this is where i decided to buy mine :P ) and he stated me that it's written in manual a C43 brake better then a ferrari, wich was the reference in braking power at that time
When i install new oem amg brake disc front and rear..the front amg one weight 24 lbs EACH! pretty heavy..but danm they are sexy lol. each of them with amg logo on it!
this makes me think..alot of people here buy those cars and then look for cheap aftermarket price for stuff like brake etc...you just don't deserve an amg if you do so! lol

That's shorter than a Ferrari F430 (114 feet), Ferrari 599 GTB (109 feet), Audi R8 (112 feet), Lambo Gallardo (112 feet), SLR (107 feet), and a 911 GT3 RS (115 feet).
The car with the best brakes I know of is the Corvette ZR1. The ZR1 takes 106 feet to stop from 60 MPH.
