The C36 Going at it on Toyo R888 Tires.

Its just a drive on one of my country's challenging mountain passes. Only this time i went prepared, as the car is on a new set of Toyo R888 R-compound semi-slicks. Those babies once hot, grip like crazy to the road.

Its like driving on rails, well almost.
The tires for their grip are a gr8 value, but nothing comes for free. Drawbacks are:

1- Noise: They are simply noisy, and the warmer they get the noisier they get.
I would assume that as they get worn, noise will increase.
2- Short tread life: They wear out quick, what do u expect of such soft rubber.
3- Out of temp Grip: When very cold they suck, when slightly warm they are ok. Just dont drive like they are warm unless ur sure they r.
4-Use only during dry season :P

any way here is the link to the vid and a few pics of the road.

awesome video. Looks like a very challenging road to pass slow motorists.
Good thing there are no slow moving trucks.

True, but seeing the steering action adds to the overall feel of the vid. the camera doesn't really show the speeds.

Jay, awesome as always
Wish we could get a whole group of C36's together to go run some of your roads
Nice driving, those tires stick like crazy...Maybe I'll get some for my next set of tires. My PS2s are gonna be dead in another month or so

Thnx Paul.

If u have the chance to run the R-compound thru its paces they r worth it. otherwise Ps2 or advans A08 are better all round. try the A08 they seem to be really gr8 tires. I was planning to get a set of them but they were at usd980 for the set and those R888 were at USD700, so i thought ill see what they are worth.

Yeah my only concern with the R888's is that they just won't get driven hard enough often enough. What's the point in having an R tire if you don't drive it hard regularly? While I do drive my car fairly hard from time to time,it is still my daily driver-for now.

Maybe when I get a second car as a daily driver I can put some R-compounds on the C36.

I have a set of R888's on my C126 last season and absolutely loved them, they were even excellent in the rain too, letting me outhandle the other 124's that I was on the track with.

Yeah they are good tires but as expected tread life will be short.

I adjusted the cold tire pressure by a couple of PSIs up from 30 to 32Psi, and what a difference that made on the part warm grip level.
Take note that i drive this car daily and even when i go for it the tire will hardly get hot enough to reach its optimum temp/pressure range of 90C'+ and 38 to 42 PSI.

Out of your experience what cold pressure should i aim for.

thats a tough call as my use with them was for one season on a 126, huge weight difference so you're probably going to have to try a few different pressure to see what best suits your car- then let me know cause mine will be going on the C36 before the end of the month. I may buy a smaller set in 225/50/16 to use on it though- I have a set of the light CLK wheels I used to run on my 124 for auto-x that need some use.

95' AMG SeeThreeSix
Jay, I commented the vid on youtube but mind as well say WOW here as well . Those turns are severe and yet I only hear the rubber screaming a few times, that must be such a rush! I wish it was not so wet here all the time, along with the varying temp otherwise I'd be all over them. I, like Paul also suffer from the daily driver syndrome so I need tires to be cost effective when it comes to the 36. I just ordered Hankook V12 evo's for the rear, goin to use up my old Potenza RE-760's up front before I replace those. But wow, these R888's are serious track rubber for sure..... AWESOME VID JAY!

thanx Ben, and all of u guys.
My AMG is my daily driver, as it is i am packing too many cars that i never drive. well the S class i do drive every now then. but all the rest well i should sell.

As for the tires, they are really good, and i bet on your kind of asphalt (not warn out and slick like most of ours) they will shock you with the grip. I dont see them lasting for long thou. And yes the R888s hardly scream unless they start slipping when hot, but by then ur wasting good rubber.

jeez dude! I just watched the video, that **** is straight out of the movies! all you needed was another car to be chasing (and preferrably a closed road!)

haha thnx man
wish i could close down that road, it would be awsome!
I should find a way to show the speedometer as that would reflect the speeds of the run since the cam doesn't really show properly the true speed.
I mean in the previous vid up the mountain highway i hit 125mph atleast twice and in some corners im well over 100 but u cant really feel it when watching the vid.

Any way i dont drive that crazy every day, dont wanna use up my lucky chances too quickly.
