Springs or Shocks for the Trunk Lid?

Like I said in my other post, I brought my car to the MB dealer last Friday, 6/17 to have my car inspected and they gave me a print out of what needs to be done on the car. It is only now Thursday, 6/23, that I discovered that my trunk lid won't stay up after I tried to open it today. I am guessing that the tech who worked on my car ripped my springs or shocks for that matter. It really sucks!!! I do not want to blame anyone since I do not have any proof that they actually took it. But I am sure that the feel of opening the trunk lid now is very different. Before, I need to pull the lid down in order for it to close. Now, it won't stay up and the lid drops down due to its weight. Sigh...

My question is: Does the trunk lid have shocks or spring, or both, in order for it to stay up? Does anyone know the part numbers for these parts? I need to get one as it pisses me off whenever I open up the trunk lid.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

There are two springs. One on each side. The mounting tabs on the trunk lid arms for the springs like to break off. There are repair brackets that help fix the issue. I'm sure its nothing that the tech did.

So you are saying that the springs most likely broke over time and it just happened when I brought the car to the dealer. Talk about bad timing... Makes sense to me. Now I just need to check later if the broken springs are still there. Thanks C43tech!

Here is a link to one being sold on Ebay, this one looks like a newer version as I believe I have the version that is up to 2006 as I do not have info on the W204 but it has everything pre 2006 and that is all I need

If your dealer sells the same one MBUSA offers, it's the Star Classic DVD. The Star Classic is easier to search. It has everything the WIS does - but only for ONE model. The WIS has info on everything MB makes, but is much more difficult to find things.

So true, I am just starting to get the hang of it and I have had the WIS for almost a year.

I was unaware of the star classic, if it is anything like the WIS then I would definitely suggest buying it if you don't have the WIS

The CDs and DVDs are a PITA. I have an older version of the W202 CD and it will no longer run with the newer versions of Windows. I have found the best solution is to subscribe to www.startekinfo.com. The WIS is part of the site as well as TSBs, etc. There are several options. I use the $18 for 24 hours option. I print off the documents I need.

Thanks for the info. Mine broke one at a time and scared the poop out of me. It sounds like someone either hit my car or shot at my car. I'll look for a tech to repair it, because now it weights a ton.

If you pull back the trunk liner on each side, and with a little bit of elbow grease, you can just reattach the spring to another section near where the bracket broke. There will be about three or four holes that you can hook the spring up to, and it will serve as a temporary (or however long) solution until you decide to get it fixed. Depending where you connect it to though, the trunk will swing open like normal, or will still need help to lift open.

Smile Thanks AGAIN!

Thanks again for the info. My husband is a very proud man and doesn't like me to fix things, but drags his feet to repair things that don't affect his everyday life. I'm not a nagger, so I just wait until I have time to complete the task and do it myself. I'll try your suggestion and let you know how I fare.

It happened to my 2000 C230K yesterday. It is interesting to real all the responses.

I search for the OEM repair kit without any fruitful result. Are they only sold via dealers only? I will try the S hook method for now.

The question is why did the MB made so many holes to the bracket? Did they expect this kind of problem?

they have extra holes in there because some people like their trunk to open faster or slower than others. Also probably due to variances in trunk lid weight due to spoilers, etc. I can tell you that they never make something expecting a problem, otherwise they would make it better.

Hmm. Interesting answer. Thank you anyway.

Here is why I disagree though. First, the original bracket has only one hole on the ear of bracket where the spring attaches to. You can only access to the holes after the ear tears off due to metal fatigue. Second, I cannot believe the BM would provide customer adjustment anywhere. It gives impression that the design is not perfect - the Germans hate this.

Regardless, I was just wondering why the extra holes anyway - more like thinking out loud.
