Engine Cover Star Emblem

Probably 50 percent of C43 owners have lost their engine cover 3-pointed star emblem. If you press on it, it will simply pop off. I have been told that a 2012 S series truck emblem will fit with a little grinding down of the prongs. I intend to go the local dealer and see what they have that would fit on the engine cover.
Some modifications would have to be done and the new emblem glued on.
Does anyone have experience doing this. Better than paying $200-300 for a new engine cover.

Before putting it on, put on 3-4 coats of high heat clear coat to protect the chrome from peeling off.

the newer style wheel caps, with the star emblem in chrome, these type of wheel caps are actually two parts: the base usually in a flat color and the emblem in chrome it's attached to it.

That emblem is just slightly smaller in diameter than the original c43 cover emblem. I used it successfully many times.

This is a wheel cap emblem used on one of my cars i had:

Engine Cover Star

That wheel cap star looks great, are those real chrome or the usual plastic wrapped crap. What's the cost, can't be too much.

Kowalski,

I have not done anything at this time. I want to go to dealership next week and look at the wheel cover emblems. I do not want to use a plastic film emblem, I need to see what the dealership has that would fit the cover. I will report back to all of you after I see what's available.

Engine Cover Star

Finally found easy solution for replacing engine cover star emblem. Purchased trunk emblem for W221 S series from Pelican Parts for $25 shipped. It has 3 prongs in center of back which you could grind off and epoxy emblem on to cover. Instead I drilled 3 holes 5/16 inch diameter in center of where star would go on cover. Takes a little bit of measuring to determine exactly where to drill but its a perfect snug fit, didnt ever have to glue. It had been bugging me for months that my star had broken off, now I am happy!

Correction- final drill bit is 5/32

Is there a photo of the W221 star mounted on the engine cover?

From my Information the W221 should be a little to big (85mm like the A class star, original is 80mm).
If the W221 realy is 85mm I will better try the wheel cap star (75mm).

Engine Cover Star

POPEY,
I dont have any pictures, not good at doing that. I can assure you that the w221 truck star fits perfectly. After using a pilot bit drill the holes out to 5/32, it will fit snug, dont even need any glue.

Can you please measure the Diameter of the S-Class star please.
I covered my engine cover with carbon fibre and it Looks strange if the star is not Fitting now. Original size is 80mm. A-Class is 85mm and I think S-Class is 85mm, too.
I bought the wheel cap. The star is simply clipped in. Diameter is 73mm, so it is a Little smaller. But the star is not flat.
A class star is fully flat. S-Class I don't know.

Engine Cover Star

POPEY,
W221 trunk star is 85mm & is flat. In my opinion it fits just fine. 73mm would definitely be a little small.

How did you warp your engine cover? 3M dinoc CF wrap? Does it hold well to heat?

I covered it with real carbon fibre and resin. The air intake tubes are just perfect. Airbox is quite good as well just some Little faults in the matrix. But I had some Problems with the front cover. Have some Little White/silver spots in the clear coat. Don't know if clear coat to thick or sanded to early or something else. One time the clear coat was fine when starting and after short time the pistol was spitting thick drops. Don't know the reason. Need to talk with some professional painter...
The front part also causes distortion after tempering in the oven. So I needed to heat up again to 60°C and Laminate some layers of cf on the inside of the cover to prevent distortion. It was a sweaty job but it works well no. No more distortion.

So S star is the same as A class one. I had the 85mm star in past and without cf it was ok but now with the cf cover doesn't fit well.

Popey,

Do you mean you need a smaller star like 76mm or 78mm or 80mm...??

Original 80mm will fit fine, 75 is ok too. But 85 does not fit well. And it must be flat.
