Air-box yearly maintenance
AMG specific #ID on the air-box filter cover
Dirty green filter with around 10k km since last clean

As I needed to pull off the air-box to get a better visual to the engine, I decided to proceed with the yearly maintenance. This includes a good clean of the panel filters (you'll notice some crud trapped on the outer side of the filters) and a general clean of the outer side of the special enlarged (thanks George) air-box.
When removing the panel holding the filters in place, I saw something I had never noticed before, the cover has a specific AMG #part ID. Didn't think this part was an AMG special.

While waiting for the ordered parts to arrive (tomorrow Wednesday), I used my spare time to thoroughly clean the air-box and filters. After using a vacuum cleaner and brush to remove the visible debris, I let the two filters soak in a tub of warm soapy water. That way the smaller particles fall to the bottom of the tub. After a long clean on both sides with as old dish washing brush, I rinsed the filters in clear water and let them dry in the sun. Used compressed air to blow in all the grooves until everything is perfectly clean and dry. A good look at each filter up into the sun, I could see that each was spanking like new clean. After having disinfected both filters (read next paragraph to understand...) placed the filters in the air-box and screwed the bottom part back together using a cross tightening pattern.
I had noticed when removing the air-filter a weird smell coming from the engine bay. I wondered if this was not due to the pigeon strike at around 120km/h some time back which obliterated the bird, but also destroyed my CF look front radiator grille. When cleaning the filters I noticed the smell was particularly strong there. Could it have been some pigeon bits which got sucked into the air-box and rotted in there? Or else a mouse other small rodent that managed to climb into one of the air intakes and got lost in the box and couldn't get out again. The mystery remains and hopefully the smell will disappear over time.
Next step after having replaced the broken engine support bracket and assembled new rubber engine aka E55K, I'll get down to insulating the bottom of the air-box with some spare gold sheeting I am using to insulate the rear engine body clip in my Ultima build.
Green cotton filters I have used since 2012, with no issues at all. My secret to avoid MAF problems? No oil anywhere on the surfaces but more regular cleaning of the filters

I use AFE Pro Dry S filters in both my AMG's. I will never use an oiled filter, you are just asking for MAF issues.

Hi Jens,
I purchased them second hand in the UK from another C43 owner, but they are available I imagine from the parent company http://www.green-filter.com/enterprise/ using the id#2295.
Certain people prefer http://www.bmcairfilters.com/
