Low Temp Thermostat

Anybody using a different thermostat to lower their coolant temps? I believe the stock one is set to start opening when coolant reaches 87*C.

I had a 79*C sitting around so I decided to install it to see how it faired in the hot summer weather. So far so good, normal engine temps came down from 87-95* to 79-83ish. Engine feels like it maintains that peppy-ness long after a cold start.

I like it but I’m wondering if it will cause any accelerated long term wear on internals. Also, I’ve read that engines running below normal operating temperature can cause oil sludge issues. I’m thinking that’s if it’s drastically lower tho.

Why tho? I'm in fl and the car runs right at 80 even when I beat on it in the summer. What's gains are there from running 10c cooler?

My car starts to feel a bit sluggish after the engine has fully warmed up and nearing 95*. On acceleration it just feels like timing is being pulled. With the new thermostat in, that sluggishness is gone.

I’m with you. The fellow who owned my car before me put a 89-90 deg thermostat in and in Houston it’s 95 to 100 everyday, so I’m seeing temps getting over the 100 mark on the gauge.. I’m thinking I should find and install a 10 degree lower stat in my engine.

Those engines are designed to run normally at hotter temps compared to other engines. Make sure however that the cooling system is pressurized correctly. Check or change the expansion tank cap as that ensures the pressure is right. They do fail as I know from experience, when steam started to spew out of the engine compartment after going up a mountain road. Changed cap, never a problem since.

Yeah, I get nervous when the temp gauge starts nearing 100. With this 79*C thermostat, temp seems to always comfortably be in the low 80's even when idling for a long time on a hot day. I may run it for the rest of summer and switch back to the stock 87*C thermostat in the fall.

Here's the part# for the 79*C if you want to give it a try: 100-200-07-15

I hear that a lot that the M104 is supposed to run at 95-100C, but it just doesn't feel right after fully warmed up. My car's cooling system should be up to par, I pretty much overhauled the whole system last spring with new water pump, aux pump, radiator, fan/clutch, reservoir & cap, temp sensor, cleaned duo valve, and coolant flush (2 times).

The lower temp thermostat makes the engine feel more lively and I like it. Nonetheless, I am still a bit skeptical about running this engine at a lower temp than it's supposedly designed for.

Chutak,
thanks for the info, just ordered a thermostat, I’ll have it installed at my next service stop. I would think the reason for the higher temp I has to do with emissions and clean running, at the expense of performance and reliability in the long term. I think any time an engine runs at higher than normal temperatures it will affect the long term reliability.
im going with the 79deg C thermostat..

I didn't heard about (79C)..?!?,,

the optional temps. are (87C) or (80C) or (71C),

I don't think (7C) only will deserve it,,

if you want more opening temp. range, then better to go with (71C)..

Silverc4s, is your car a C36 or a C43? I just noticed your profile says you have a C43. The thermostat I mentioned is for the M104 I-6 motor on the C36/C280/E320/SL320. Sorry for the confusion.

Honestly, 79C seems like enough for my climate. Ideally, I'd go for a 80-82C if there was one for my car, just to keep temps closer to "design" but still tolerable.

Chutak,
first off, apologies for not paying attention to my spell checker, as it hammered your “name” ...;(

Just PM me your address and I’ll send it along when it arrives. I’m a fan of C36s as well, btw.
