thinking of breaking down the grill and spraying the black plastic lightly with some matte. It looks quite gray now. Any reason not to do this or alternative ideas?

Nothing bad doing this. You can also try and find a avantgarde grille. That sharpens up the front. Plenty of other options available, like a CF insert for example, but please keep away from those which have a big Star in the center

cool. I want to keep it factory just blacken the gray. I saw the AMG like grill with the emblem embedded and to me it kills the whole car. Why do you want two logos like that. It’s too modern looking.
from what I can tell that plastic part is cheap so I’ll just try to matte black it with some adhesion promoter and a matte clear coat.

As PJmak says, go for an avantgarde grill insert. Those from the W210 'E' series fit with a some cutting and adjusting

wow that looks really good. I see the avantegarde on eBay but they’re from Latvia and Taiwan. Not sure what to expect there for close to $150.
I’ll take a look at the w210 setup. I don’t want to cut the factory car. I assume it’s only cutting the replacement grill down or something?
Sorry. In 2000 the look was updated on the w210 which redesigned the front end.
Look at the pic here and compare the grilles. ignore the text on the pic.
So look for a grill off a pre 2000 W210 e class.
oof this is getting confusing. Neither of these are the avantgarde version. What’s the best way to know if I’m getting a pre 2000 avantgarde version for the w210? I can kinda tell from the left and right slope I guess maybe? Older one is more squared?

Thanks everybody for the support. I had no idea what to do and what to cut and didn’t want to f up the part so just went for it with a dremel and started on the outside in. Came out great. Thanks so much so happy with the results:
