Exhaust Tips - Hiding the gaps

I know there seems to be an even split of people that are bugged about the fake exhaust tips and those that don't care. I fall in the camp that does care a bit. Not so much about having tips that aren't physically connected, but more about the how much gap can be seen through the tips and how much light passes through. At certain angles you can see the ground, tyres or heat protection material. And even worse, from some angles you can't even see the muffler, so it looks like a fake exhaust completely. That's not acceptable IMHO. I did a bit of a mod to cover up the gap just to see proof of concept really, i'd like to hear anyone's opinions, I can't seem to find a thread on the subject.

Left at start of project

Right at Start of Project - Too much gap

Create Template with some card and tracing

Completed Templates.

template cutout from 2mm galvanized steel. Create tabs from the exhaust tip cut-out and add a jubilee clip to secure. (Excuse the rough cutout with a hack saw - Its only proof of concept). Spray painted flat black High Temp Paint.

Installed image from underneath. Because its attached to the exhaust, it can move if and when the exhaust does without effecting the tips. It sits about 2mm off the steel exhaust tip as i was worried about squeaking.

left after install

right after install

finished look. Heat on the tips is more or less the same as before the mod. Driven around for a couple of hours with no sign of a heat issue.

Opinions or ideas for the final version?

The best or nothing
Haha nice! Very clever. I wonder why they didn't think of this in the factory. It struck me how much gap there is and it looks awful. Especially on a car like this. But I noticed it the most on the Maybach S650 Cabrio.

Just wondering, does the C63 have dual exhaust as well or does it actually have quad exhaust and not just tips?

I think this is the OEM c63? Not sure what the secondary small ports are for. I looked at some pics and the 63s have the same gap issue though, probably sound, some sort of pass through?

Even the E63 has the same problem. Form over function.

Gravity 101 - Good idea, it looks good. I had always planned to do it in the C-class I owned before. I plan to modify the exhaust on another Mercedes-Benz model that has completely fake exhaust tips. Can you or anyone else measure approximately the gap between the end tip and the real exhaust pipe end? Or maybe the pipe is going inside the tip? Thanks in advance.

I think that will depend on the exhaust fitment during assembly. Mine went inside about a quarter inch on one side, half inch on the other. Incidentally on a later GLC I did, I found fine metal black mesh and a jubilee clip to be a much easier and less fiddly option. Sort of make an open cone and clamp it on the exhaust. It had the same effect from behind for me. Ymmv.

This is actually clever but it's a shame you get fake exhaust tips on a benz thats supposed to be classified as luxury.
