Question AMG dynamic select steering wheel retrofit possible?

Does anyone know if it's possible to install the new 2020 c43 steering wheel dynamic selector on older models? *I own a 2019 C43 AMG*

Sorry, don't know if it's possible, but at least on the FL I would think it should be as it is now an option on the 2020 C43 and it's optional on the C63. It's only standard on the C63S. The part is called the AMG Drive Unit. You most likely will have to replace the entire steering wheel with one that has the AMG Drive Unit and then code it in.

I reached out to the parts department at my local dealership. They said no it’s not possible. I left a message with the service department. Will follow up and let you know what they say. I have a 2020. I regret not equipping it.

It's possible that it requires a different wiring harness. I can definitely say that it is one of the best new interior features of the FL. I love it in my C63S and I use it pretty much exclusively to change drive mode related settings. I think the best part is that you can push the drive mode selector and that immediately activates the Individual mode from whatever current mode it's in.

I asked the same **** at the dealership and they said no way, same for the HUD. I have a feeling it's part of the car assembly and you'd have to take a bunch of stuff apart to get at the harness

Weird... I asked my service advisor and he said you just need to replace your steering wheel, purchase a certain harness, and then take it to him to code it. I don't know if it really is this simple but I do want a second opinion.

Probably very possible. I got my 2019 back from the dealer and they did a software update on my car. When I came back I used my own diagnostic to look and there was an additional control unit that they coded in but it was missing due to the steering wheel not being there. “AMG Drive Unit” which is code U88. No errors on dash so I didn’t ask them to revert.

I think often these kinds of OEM retrofit mods are dependent on the skill, knowledge, and confidence of the folks at your service department. Some always say no, and a few others out there seem eager to do these OEM retrofits whenever possible. I think we should all make a habit of posting up feedback threads for service departments that successfully perform these mods. It would be helpful to them and to this whole community.

Yeah, there is "can't" and then there's "won't". There is also the liklihood that, even if you got all the parts, ran any new wiring, etc, it would require programming/unlocks from Mercedes in the car's software that I suspect they have decided they will not support. It does puzzle me why companies behave this way, particularly for software-only changes. If a customer is motivated, pays (more), why not? But I suppose that is leverage Mercedes can use to get you to buy a new car.

What is the old saying “ with enough money you can do almost anything”, that may apply here.

Ship just docked today with Wifeys C43 onboard, and I did order the U88 drive unit, should be fun when I drive it ......
