C63 as stated in AutoWeek Oct 31, 2005
As it reads - verbatim:
---------------
Headline: Super C-Class.
Mercedes-Benz's appetite for ever-increasing power outputs has resulted in a prototype C-Class with AMG's new 6.3-liter V8 engine. Call it a C63 AMG, if you like.
The engine, as unveiled at the recent Frankfurt motor show ("Big Think in Frankfurt," Sept. 26), packs 510 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque - 148 hp and 89 lb-ft more than today's C55 AMG. Mercedes-Benz says there are no plans to place the new car into series production, but AMG may build a limited run of cars.
------------
There you have it - word for word.

I just bought my 2006 C55 2 months ago and I always thought that the next power increase for the AMG C class would be put into the W204. The news of a 408bhp C55 is great... but for my own insanity... I hope it's not true.
If this article is the real deal, I'm going to be mad at myself for not holding off on my C55 purchase . I hope Mercedes Benz does not release a 408bhp C55 anytime in 2006. A 2007 release would make me feel a lil better. Even better than that would be confirmation that the power increase is only for W204 models.
Oh well... I still love my 367hp W203 C55.

it all depends when the w204 is coming out... if the w204 c class is coming out in 07' like i heard than the c63 would probably come out some time in 06'.. you could always find out exactly when they are coming out and sell the c55 right before and get one before the c55 prices drastically drop...

this is probably going to sound so stupid..but what is the difference between the SOHC and DOHC..i know what they both mean, but is there a performance difference? And torque is how "punchy" the car is right?

The OHC part is over head cam. So, it’s either single overhead cam, or dual overhead cams. In either case, it’s the number of cams in a head (in case you didn’t know, the cams control the opening and closing of the valves). In the case of a DOHC engine, one cam will operate the exhaust valves, while the other will operate the intake valves. With a SOHC, one cam controls both intake and exhaust. Of course, your next question may be “Under what conditions are two camshafts better than one?” Good question, dual cam heads are more expensive to build, and have a greater mass (this is opening the floodgates, but the four cams on a DOHC V8 do have more mass than the two cams of a SOHC V8), and if both engines use rocker arms, I don’t see the benefit. HOWEVER, a SOHC engine requires rockers on a multivalve engine whereas a DOHC does not. Using rocker arms is not as efficient as a straight cam/lifter/valve configuration.
HP versus torque is a book long discussion, and if you find someone willing to pay 25 cents a word I’ll write that never-ending diatribe. In the mean time – torque is what pushes you back I your seat when you jump on the loud pedal. Horsepower is the measurement of an engine’s ability to maintain torque at higher RPM’s in the same gear. I know, clear as mud. In a sense, you’ve got it right though. Engines with lots of torque are quite “punchy”. Those with high HP numbers can continue to pulverize the driver throughout the rev range.

ah ok..so I'll think of the DOHC as a two-way street and the SOHC as a one-way street...and the rocker arms are sort of like a "guide". thank you for that explanation!

As for the W204... I hope the next AMG C class body has a wider stance as compared to our current W203. I would like to see more agressive body lines to go with the power increase.
