What type of oil filter does the 6.2L engine use?

The oil filter for the "63 series" engine is it a spin on metal type (like most cars) or a paper cartrage that goes inside slips a metal filter canester?

Also is it easy to get to if you want to change the oil yourself?

I *could* change my oil but why? Sure it might save me a few dollars but the time and effort I have to put into it, I don't mind dropping it off at the dealers for a bit, getting a loaner, and then coming back after I do some shopping or after work.

It was not a question about if you could or about saying money. The question was going out to any owners that enjoy tuning on there own car. I'll just call the dealer and see if they know, thanks.

it's paper cartridge, and yes it's very easy to change.

look at the pic below
see where the Star sign is on the engine cover, now look just to the right of the star, you see the oil filter housing

Thank you so much Eurosport, you confirmed my suspicions

I have a question. My dipstick does not match the illustration in the owner's manual so I'm not sure how to read how much oil I've used, now at 1039 miles. The level is between the top two marks...

anywhere between those 2 top marks like you have is fine
i'd change the oil/filter at this time for sure since you're at 1k miles.
maybe even do another change somewhere between 2-3k miles to get all the little particles out from breakin.
it might be overkill in some people's minds but i always think long term engine life, no "lease type" thinking if you know what i mean.

enjoy the car

Thanks for being a valuable resource here!
I will probably change the oil soon... as long as the car proves reliable, I plan to keep it for a good long time. It's the best $65K I've ever spent!

Thanks for the pics of the oil filter. I was looking at doing a remote mount filter, but after seeing that I don't see why. How ever I still may use a by-pass filter system.

I sure as hell hope you have not uses ANY OIL!!! This oil thing is scary to me. I don't need a 70K oil burner. I already have an oil burner (Dodge Ram CTD).

4 wheels
Its a fleece filter and the whole oil issue is a moot point IMO. Using a quart of oil every 4K or so is not bad at all. Just get used to carrying a quart of Mobil 1 0W-40 around.

I agree. It's not like anyone's driving down the street blowing blue smoke. IMO high performance engines are going to see the oil level drop a bit between changes. My Evo uses about a 1/2 quart between oil changes. Sometimes I bother topping it off, sometimes I don't. It has 78K trouble-free miles. If the engine is running smoothly, and making full power... I don't see why anyone would see oil usage as an "issue"
