SWITCHING THE "PROGRAM MODE SELECTOR" (C) (S) (M) YOU NEED TO BE STOPPED!
What I have been saying all along that the "Program Mode Selector" in which it switches the Hydraulic gear "Should Only be changed" when in the "P" park position. You can find the detailed information in your owners manual under "control in details" pp 125

This would be a first. I've never read or done this for all the Mercs I've driven in the past.

That's stupid! Maybe you they'll charge you to make it work while driving again, like they do the delimit on the PP package. Just another way to rip you off.

Spoke to my AMG service tech guy and he said, if that were the case the car would never allow you to do this, said this tranny was designed to do so, continue doing so as this will NOT harm your tranny and if it were to have any problem it is surely covered under the warranty, no questions asked.

2008 Jeep SRT8 NOW ... C63 IN MAY!
I dont think this is accurate - I have had my car since May and I have never had an issue with this. I also spent close to 2 hours getting a walk-through on every aspect of the car by the head Mechanic at my dealership - and this was never mentioned. ALSO - I have driven many cars with similar transmission set ups - AM DB9, SLR, ML63, Porsche Turbo - and everyone of them allows you to switch from Auto to Sport to Manual whenever you want -I am calling misinformation here - I will check the manual later for confirmation - but I would say that I am 90% sure this is incorrect ...

It's to remove them from liability. If your messing and looking down at buttons your eyes are not on the road. It will not hurt the vehicle at all, and if it would the button would simply not work while in motion. Convertibles have been stopping you from messing with the top while in motion or above a certain speed for years. Knowing that I am sure Mercedes knows what they are doing with a simple, C, S, M button...
Second: it does nothing with any gear or mechanical piece at all. This button simply alters what the computer is going to do in respect to the transmission.

+2, it's likely a liability issue (and yes I also read that paragraph in the owner's manual, after already switching on the fly.) MB probably wants to guard against any sudden downshift (by the computer changing programs) that could throw off the driver.
You're just telling the carputer to run a different program. Your command is going thru the computer; the computer will not do anything that will harm the tranny.
I'm not a mechanic, but I do post on the internet and thus have full confidence in my opinon.

You don't need to stop! The manual recommends you stop so you don't forget to shift once you get to M mode. Road conditions may be slick and if you have engine breaking you may lose traction. There is no tranny issues! Same on my previous C55...change on the fly=no problem. Do not worry!

If you switch back and forth whilst driving many times during a brief period (say, a 45 minute window), the computer will get confused - in manual mode, it sometimes starts shifting automatically or won't shift at all. Simply pull over and turn off the car to reset the computer. Only has happened to me once. The C63 has upgraded software in its 7G Tronic transmission, so it may no longer be an issue. Overall a fantastic trouble free transmission that is even better in the C63.

I change Modes everyday and as stated above, that is only for the people who do not have a clue as to what the difference between Manual, Sport and Comfort is.. I personally would have preferred those people were sold normal 3 Series or C230, or at least lock them in C so they can't move and make this world a more bitter place for the rest of us.

This is definitely not an issue on the C63. (well at least my C63) I usually start off the day in C when the car is cold, because in S, the first downshift of the day into 1st is a little rough. After a few miles I go to S. Get stuck in freeway bumper to bumper traffic? - back to C. Want as much control I can get? Go to M.

"Should" does not translate to must. As others have pointed out, it is a liability issue in that MB does not want some inept driver getting confused and causing an accident as a result. The manual would state "must" if you could not switch while driving and they would have caused the computer to disallow the function anyway (e.g. try enabling your cruise control while in M mode - won't work).
