AMG ML 63

I am thinking pretty hard about this for replacing my
X5 anyone have any thoughts?

BTW according to Road and Track 0-60 times

AMG Ml 63 4.5 seconds

BMW M3 4.6 seconds

How are these BMW babies saying the M3 is faster than the C63
when its not even as fast as the SUV in our line-up

If you are thinking of the ML63, also think about the Cayenne Turbo. Nothing will ever beat those cars in handling, in their own segment.

Not that it's in the same league in terms of price/luxury, but a Jeep SRT8 (weighing about 1200lbs less) will run with Cayenne Turbos very easily. Granted it's a brute by comparison, but it gets the job done nonetheless.

Andy I would never own a jeep just for principles sake.
I like the SRTs and there is one on our lot here in our little
bitty town. But Chrysler messed over my mother when she was
a new widow in 1982. She bought a new lebaron turbo
with some of my dads insurance money when he died.
The car had a recall in 6 months of purchase for
turbo replacement. The service dept. changed it
and it caught fire on the way home and was totaled.
She only had enough to make a down payment and
she was upside down. Chrysler refused to pay and left
a new widow on here own. No product for me.
they knew she couldnt afford a lawyer to fight.
I was in college making 3.25 an hour an unable to
help. I wrote Chrysler and they told me to go to court.
I still remember

I don't blame you a bit Paul. That's total BS on the part of Chryco.

Thing is it cost thin alot more in the long run than if they would have made right. I have bought so many cars and trucks in my lifetime, that surely one or two would have been a Dodge or CHrysler. A truck or a hemi.

0-60 times are largely dependent on traction. The ML has 4wd and therefore is much easier at putting the power down to the ground as opposed to the M3. The M3 is not a drag machine so I am not surprised that it lose at drag races, its a track orientated car that was meant to excel in the corners with the power coming at very high RPMS, think of the M3 as a very big S2000.

I found out by hanging on the M boards when I had a Z4M that more of the previous body style went to the track than the E90 92 and 93 do.
I am surprised really at the lack of trackers. And when you put that together with the number of M3 smackers, its really confusing. Since they have nothing to back up their claims other than stoplight to stoplight racing. And half the time the other driver didnt even know he was in a race. Its really pathetic when you think about it.

Yooker I am not surpriser either but when you consider the number of M3 children running around the ether posting "I smoked a Hemi tonite"
I smoked a AMG tonite" "I smoked a Ferrari Scudderia tonite"
etc etc. It is quite funny to find out the M3 is slower than the AMG SUV though.

AMG ML63, M3 CSL, Z4M Coupe, New Audi TT, Audi R8 (coming)
Paul, I moved from an X5 4.8is to my ML63 and ran that for 20,000 miles and just over a year. I loved it, especially with that engine mated to its traction. I used to be able to spin all four wheels on a slippery surface.

We (EVO) tested the ML63 together with the latest Cayenne Turbo and a Lotus Elise S, and the ML63 only lapped slower than the Cayenne because its stability control could not fully be turned off, otherwise it was quicker everywhere else in the lap. We managed 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds and 0-100 mph in just over 11 seconds, so it's hilariously quick.

I have since changed to an X6, which is also great, but I miss that engine..

C63, Scuderia, 599, 16M, AEV Hemi Jeep, '57 Porsche Speedster, '55 300SL, SLS on order
Paul,

You know my affection for awesome cars. And I know yours. The one car that I owned longer than any other was my x5 4.8is. Had it nearly 3 years. I traded it for an RS4 (crap as I have noted elsewhere) and then traded that for the ML63. While the ML63 was incredibly powerful, I missed (and still miss) the 4.8is.

I never have regrets about getting rid of any of my old cars but the 4.8is was a keeper if there ever was one. the 4.8is was akin to a wide receiver whereas the ML63 is more of a tight end. Both get the job done, but the X5 4.8is handled extraordinarily well and almost made me forget the high center of gravity (almost). Powerful (not nearly as much as the ML63) and a real pleasure to drive. Indeed, as SUVs are heavy by nature, the agility of the 4.8is was quite welcomed (which I admit is counter to the C63 v. M3 rationale I have)

I might suggest that if you are looking for a new car, that an older 4.8is would perhaps be available with low, low miles. Worth checking out.

Of course, there are rumors of an "M" version of the X5 coming out shortly, but.....

The ML63 is a great car. The biggest problem with it is its transmission. I have gone through three of them in a little over 20,000 miles. If I could do it all over again, I would of got the Cayenne Turbo

2008 Jeep SRT8 NOW ... C63 IN MAY!
I have an ML63 - it is a great car. Cayenne turbo is also good - but ML63 has a better style in my opnion. Also - it handles incredibly well due to its wide stance for an SUV. I have also owned a SRT8 Jeep - lets just say there is a reason why I do not own it anymore and also a reason why it costs half as much as the ML. BUT - it is a ROCKET!

Wrong. I own both and have disproven this. Check the ML63 forum here for all of the problems. Brakes, Tranny, electrical etc. She is a beast, but requires a lot of maintenance.

A big S2000?? Wow, not even close. the S2000 properly tuned can out track the M3 in a heartbeat, and we all know the M3 out tracks the C63.

Paul, for all the reasons you said, I would surely keep the 4.8is. No doubt.

paulGT3,

Being a Porsche guy yourself, you should definitely check out the Cayenne turbo before making ANY decisions...

Sure, check it out. I ordered one of the first Cayene Turbos before they came out. When the dealer demos came out, i drove one - great car but I cancelled my order as I could not reconcile its styling. This many years later, I still cannot, tho the sheer number of them has made them more acceptable.

I have lusted after a Cayenne turbo but the Cayenne owners on Rennlist them selves kind of discouraged me. However I think an 06 or later is OK.

The BMW 4.8is is pretty hot, and there arent very many of them. Tons of 3.0s and 4.4 but few 4.8is. Whats funny is when my BMW dealer got one in he didnt even put in on the lot. He just called me. Given my need for speed. He figured I was the guy to buy it. It was an extra allotment for him and he didnt expect it. It was the best sounding V8 ever until the C63 came out.
Only problem was my 18 year got tagged for 100mph in it. ANd the officer yelled at him for stealing it. (he didnt steal it, he was going to the mountains for a job interview and I let him take it in case of adverse weather)

i have been driving the X5 for the past 3 weeks and must say a great car but the visibility out of the rear is horrible, can't see ****......
had a few problems with the tranny, turning radius is worse than the ml, and did not like the command unit, it's not that it is difficult to use it's just that you must concentrate to use it, you have to take your eye's off the road as compared to the ML, must faster to get where you are going on the ML, the ML command unit is quick and precise. plus interior materials are much better in the ML, the BMW seats are fabulous!
