Boston to Los Angeles in C63....would you?

Gonna work a deal for the C63 this weekend and join the club....

Here is my question:

After break-in, would you drive the car from Boston to Los Angeles (3000+ miles)? I'm moving in late January and cannot decide if I want to enjoy the hell out of the car for 3000+ miles or not take a chance that a "light" will come on at some point and I'd end up at a dealership in Missouri or somewhere along the way.

My other option is to ship it in a closed container truck, fly to LA, and pick up my baby at the other end.....

Your thoughts?

I would get a clear bra put on it first and then maybe. My ideal choice though would be to have it trucked. Just not really interested in driving my AMG across country. One man's opinion of course. Shorter trips, less than 800 miles I would probably do it.

going by yourself or with someone else?

i have done Michigan to OC and its a long trip by yourself. i think the initial fun factor of the new car would wear off a few hours in and then you still have a good 3 days left. it would be an adventure though and cheaper than shipping it, but if you are worried about the miles.

tough call, depends how much you like driving.

i've done LA to NC and LA to Florida. they were both great and fun drives. if you dont want a clear bra just tape up the front, mirrors, and right behind the wheels to stop chips with BLUE painters tape (wont leave marks, and sis used a lot for track days). also if you can mount a camera and tape the drive it will be fun to watch in fast forward. go for it have fun.

shipping would be about $1500 or less, i doubt hotels, gas, food, snacks, drinks, mileage on the car, and your time would be cheaper than $1500.

Actually, my job pays $.27 per mile for gas and "per diem" so no expenses other than the miles I put on the car. I guess my concern is about pushing the car for 3000+ straight miles right after break-in. Don't want ANY maintenance false alarms on the road in a car worth $70K. But I guess I could get that with a Kia too.....

Drove MA to MS to CA once. Drove CA to MA once. And now doing MA back to CA.....all by myself.....so driving is not the issue. Just looking for some advice/feedback regarding how I should challenge the car after 1500 miles. Thanks.

Could not agree more and one more I may add “road rash”, ship it, and save the fun driving for L.A.

On a 3000 mile trip unless you drive it in a bubble your car will be hit with lots of crap (e.i. rocks, the flying crap of the back of trucks etc) I call then "road rash"

oh god yes, I did that trip in my Lexus. It had no chips for the year i had it in LA... on the trip out it got SEVERAL. Tons of trucks on the open road throwin up rocks etc. Also in January? That is winter... aka horrible time to be playing with a C63.

I would put good money on a check engine light! Plus your tires will be half worn.

In less than a month I put on 5900 miles.

Picked up my car in Charlotte, NC. Made my way up to Montreal, then finally back to Las Vegas.

The car is more than up to the task.

If you do - FOR SURE get a clear bra installed on the ENTIRE front end - cross country trip will destroy your paint without it.

No doubt the C63 is up to the task, I just wouldn't want to take a car I just drove off the lot on a cross country trek this time of year. I'm sure it would be fun, but then again I think that trip is a little too far. I'd rather find some really good driving roads and hit those rather than putting boring highway miles on the car. Not to say that you wouldn't find some interesting roads along the way.

For sure. I had it done before I hit the road

Luckily the worst thing I encountered on the trip was some rain

Should probably bring some tire chains... just in case... Low profile wheels are a pain to get chains on..

Go where your heart is; nasty time of the year for a cross country drive.

How long for trip vs. shipping?

I can meet you at LAX to help you with pickup!

I wouldn't want to put on that many miles that quickly. Ship it and enjoy driving it up and down the coast in CA.

+1 -- clear bra really works. Get one and enjoy the trip. I wouldn't worry about any "technical difficulties" from the car. Life's an adventure, why not enjoy it in a C63?

Take pictures
