Aftermarket Airfilters

So i fitted some BMC airfilters today. THe car seems to rev fairly smoother. Thats all i have noticed. I do have an ecu tune so, i can not compare to stock. I will be putting it on the dyno again next month hopefully in search of more power (I made 435rwhp last time).

Has any one used these filters just looking for some info on them, and charcoal filters, do all c63's come with them, because i didnt have any fitted to mine.

Cars we have in Australia don't have charcoal filters, I have fitted K&N filters to mine which is a lot cheaper then BMC, all I know the different between K&N and BMC is K&N folded their filter material to form the zig zag shape which cause the edge to become thinner and might let some small dirt to pass through but BMC molded the filter material to the zig zag shape so the whole filter is the same in thickness.

May I ask where did you get your BMC and how much ?

are the BMC filters also a "oiled" filter as K&N are?

Both of the filter are oiled to help it to trap more mirco dust in the air.

I'm seeing the C63 AMG BMC drop-in air filters on various Web site at the MSRP of $119.99 each, and of course, we need two of them.

How often should you change the air filters? Or do you just clean it?

I got the VPC air filters but I'm not sure if they purchase them from another company like K&N or BMC.

I to have the BMC filters that I ordered from their website, they actually come from Itlay...anyway, the first thing I notice is when I shift gears in manual mode under hard acceleration, the engagement of the next gear seems to have less of a lag/pause, I dont know if it from the motor being able to breath a little easier, it just seems that it is not as "conjested" the air flow. This doesnt mean I notice a minimal horsepower increase, just better driveability, which equals to better "seat of the pants" feeling.

I might add, that I also removed the charcoal filters and in that process, I found sitting in my airbox a bottle cap from a plastic water bottle, the service guys at MB were made of aware of this and said that these motors have sucked items such as that in the past, I couldnt believe my eyes when I saw this bottle, so I guess once and a while it is good to take a peak under there.

I agree I do not think that it will pass anything. I used K&N on my offroad race bike and would not have won many Score races if they pass dirt. The tighter folds will only effect the vortex of air as it exites the filter. With little or tighter folds, the vortex will be smaller.

I think others just have non tighter more rounded folds will have a larger vortex of dead air around the filters. Really think the others had to deveate from the K&N filter design for legal patent reasons.

Thats just my 2 cents.

Enjoy your filters and new found power gains and quicker shift points.
Very interesting observatiion on the shift points too.
I am now studing the effects on cooler air inside the intakes and will keep updated if I see any positive results, will not post if it has not positive results for will waste time.

Be safe

So, are you saying that K&N is as good as any others? I was on the K&N site and they do not have the 2009 C63 filter but the 2008, I assume they are the same? Part number 33-2405 and I need 2?! Easy change and I can do it myself, right? TIA.

I have been running PiperCross from England for Track Days. They came with the CF Airbox from VRP/Carboio. No complaints. Running BMC for daily use. Same results as Nick.

I really think that anything you can do to replace the Stock set up will be a great benefit. Whether its BMC, Green, K&M or PiperCross. The stock paper/charcoal set up is suffocating the M156 and needs to be freed!!!

How could that have happened? We have a grill in front of the air scoops and the bottom of the engine is pretty well sealed up.

96 and 08 911 turbos
for reference, used oil analyses have shown that oiled cotton gauze filters have produced a greater amount of silica (i.e. sand) in the oil then standard paper filters.

So yes, they flow more air partially because they do let some more dirt in. This tends to happen more after they've been cleaned and imperfectly re-oiled.

Same P/N. I am using them on my '09. Simple DIY. Just pull up the center section (with star) and remove the 5 torx bolts that hold the top half down. Unscrew the 2 rubber hoses and unclip the MAF sensor wire harness. Then pull top half off and replace. While you are in there, remove the charcoal filters. Make sure you have a torx bit set. I forget which size.

IIRC, if you don't have a torx bit, look around for a correctly sized Allen wrench as they work too on the torx bolts.
