AMG 6.3 high-flow airbox demystified
One of our users here purchased a set of modified high-flow AMG airboxes recently from a vendor that piqued my interest. What I discovered is that the only thing modified was the lattice that holds the charcoal filters and the air funnel. The air tube appears to be untouched (assuming since I do not have a pic of the modifed box fron another angle).
Look at the last picture and notice how large the oval air tube is and also notice how the "flat" funnel reduces the overall cross-section of the air tube impeding air flow. Replacing the funnels should increase the volume of air going into the engine. The DIY will be to remove the charcoal lattice frame (this frame also holds the air funnel) and fit modified funnel. The million dollar question is where do we find this funnel? Or can someone like Euroteck or Revozport make them out of CF/FRP since getting the funnels injection molded will be too expensive for such a short product run.
Here is modified vs. stock:
Stock looking from the inside:
Stock looking into the air duct (see circled):

Wow should have looked at your thread, did not know you started a new one, but you do see exactly what i saw (long time ago) on the lattice removal in the tops. Looks like the "black" lattice is welded, (glued or heat molded) to the silver parts. Might create a problem "breaking" he parts loose. I have been loking at this since I been doing intake studies to increase "cool" air intot he engine.
Off topic, have you removed or peeked under the noise reduction HEAT retaining material that is tacked on the hood? EXACTLY where the intake cones are located, there are two, one each side cut outs in the hood Wounder if those could be used for like Ram air to get more airlow into the engine. Humm. Looks like I might get a new hood to experiment with.
but guess I need tune to get the throatle bodies to open more to use the more air flow in the engine.
Drive safe.

I never removed the insulator pad from the hood. However, I do not believe there is anything on the hood that can be used as a ram intake. The stock design is done quite well with the exception of the funnels inside the box top. These funnels must be an off-shelf item. The key is figuring where they come from.

I agree with you as far as nothing there meant to be used as such, but just funny how the cutouts under the insolator pad line up perfectly with the front intake scopes. Just wounder how if it were to pop thru that would increase air into the box. Maybe to much air for a untuned engine to handle since the TB only opens 50% untuned. All the data I have been logging is quite nice and shows the car intake does run about the same as outside ambiante temp. Inside the box the temp increase by at least 30 to 50 Degrees, here in Socal and my tip the past weekend to Vegas, shows very hot conditions inside the box. Shows we need to insulate the boxes from the engin (bottom). I have not compresssed the data for volicity in the intake vs. the box. you live in a area simular to me, but tell me what would happen if the engine compartment got a "little" wet. Was thinking if I got CF hood and modded it with vents facing windsheild to reduce the heat buildup in the compartment. Heat has to kill the engin over time and for use who live in 100+ F enviroments, it has to hurt even more. Just thinking.

To fully demystify the boxes and construction, you might approach this fact finding mission through the AMG Private Lounge. FirstShadow has suggested the following link for possible chat with AMG reps.

Left side of pic is in the intake tube Left side, right side of pic is in the Left Side box top. Same time, same conditions. Just different results.
If I can get the intake temp down the box temp will also drop I am sure.
It will help us who have to put up with 100+ F on days we drive.

Lomita-I'll check in the Lounge when I get a chance.
Pmknapp-I'd like to find a hood venting solution. It doesn't rain much here so it may not be an issue. Are you in Palm Springs?

Guys, definitely no charcoal filters in there just the std filter .
I have since swapped for k&ns. Will have to pull the lids off again tomorrow to get you the part nos.
As i said they are exactly the same as your modified ones in the picture.

Thanks jjb. I have a source for the parts if you can post the part #s. Thanks a ton for your help and time. It is appreciated. (You too SinCity)

I have thought about cutting away the flat section of the funnel. After looking at where the MAF is located, it may produce errors in the reading since some of the air will flow underneath the MAF vs flowing through it; so no go there. It would have worked it the MAF was located further downstream. That is just based on my unscientific observation.
If the ROTW (Rest Of The World) parts are different, I wonder if we could get them without the MAF sensors? The owner of the boxes on the top pic stated they came with the MAF. I am begining to think ROTW are different since jjb03 confirmed he did not have charcoals and thus not needing the lattice. If we could get the box tops without the MAF, that would be great. If not, I wonder if Revozport in Hong Kong have access to the ROTW tops and make molds out of the funnels and sell them to us here in the Americas as CF funnels to retrofit? This would be the most economical route, but would require some Dremeling to remove the platic lattice that is retaining the funnel.
North 44 C55: When you got the VRP/Carbonio airbox, how did you remove the stock MAF sensors from the box top? Does the metal retaining clip slide off?

Yes I live in that area also and drive to San Deigo each day, yes long drive thus many miles on car now, I bring my eggs each morning and cook on the hood after getting to San Diego.
Good find on the tops. I wounder what those Charcoal filters were for original but to rob power? All 63's here in US have those. Some EPA thing huh? Ok great research.

Sent a note to Revozport (they are still sleeping in HK).
Revozport: Could you please confirm if the airbox funnel in Hong Kong is the same as the one on the left. If so, do you think your company will be interested in manufacturing high-flow air funnels out of CF so we can retrofit them into our boxes? This may be an oppurtunity since all AMG 63 engine boxes in North America are the same throughout the entire product line.

Those are Molding #s not part #'s. Part #'s should start with 3 digits like 204 XXX XXX or 001 XXX XXX
Lets see if we can locate those

As far as airboxes. I am making aluminum housings to test the MAFs and see what kind or power increase can be found. Carbonio boxes make 12-15RWHP, depending on other mods.

Vadim: What do you mean aluminum housings? Do you mean the box tops? I am just concerned with using aluminum because it will act like a CPU heatsink, wouldn't it?
North 44 C55: Lomita or jjb03 will have to find those P/Ns. How do you remove the MAFs from the stock box top? Do the metal clips slide off?

Aluminum housing that are separate from air boxes. This way a better air box can be made.
BTW, aluminum has been used for MAF housing on pretty much all domestics and imports in 80s and 90s. The only reason they went to palstic is the cost factor in later models.

Vadim: You were the first here to discover the extra power gained by removing the charcoals. Do you think that if we grind out the flat sections (pic # 2 & #3 above) of the air funnel, will it throw off MAF readings?

Correct Part #'s
A 156 090 05 01 / A156 094 056 06
I found these on the front edge of the Box Top between 2 raised dots, beside the slot that Front Engine Cover clips into.
jjb03: Could you kindly/please get us these #'s from your Box Tops for reference??
Thanks in advance for your time.
