Just getting rears replaced?
So, after 6.5k miles, its time for me to change out the stock rear pirellis. I was thinking about buying a set of tires just for the rear until the front ones balded as well, then replace all four. I was wondering what tire has a similar tread pattern to the stock Pirellis that are relatively cheap but decent. I just want to change out the rears until I can replace all four with another tire.
I was talking to a mechanic I know relatively well who has worked with Mercedes for as long as I can remember, and told him how I wanted to change the fronts to 245 when the time came, and the rears to 265. He told me that the he would not recommend upping the width on the fronts, just changing the back widths. Basically he told me that thee speedometer/odometer would be off by about 5mph. The rear end would be a couple millimeters higher than the front end, but not noticeable. I just wanted to know what you guys think, and also if you had recommendation for a cheap but decent tire I can temporarily replace my rears with right now, and if I should get a higher width just for the rears as well. Thanks.

I put a set of Continental Extreme Contact DWS ZR tires on my car last weekend and I'm very please with the tires. I did go 245 front and 275 rears. I only paid $883 for all four mounted and balenced at Discount Tire. I don't track the car so I just can't see spending excess cash so the point is mute. These tires hook up extremely well and are much quieter then the Pzero's. I had replaced the rear Pzero's once and it cost me $670 just for the rears.
I'm sure there will be some haters but bang for the buck I'm pleased.
Tread:540 Traction:A Temp:A
Front:95Y
Rear:94Y
Let the beating begain!

I spoke with Discount Tire today and they said they couldn't align the tires, only mount/install them. They said I would have to get them aligned at the dealership, which wants to charge me an addition $150 to align then...any suggestions?

Agreed, however I'm not only asking for what tires to buy, just which tire has a similar tread pattern to the Pzeros since I'm keeping the fronts until they were out. If this was posted before, then I apologize for the repost.

b) NEVER go to a dealer for alignment, EVER. The best alignments I have ever had done cost about $80 for all four corners (L.A. area). Ask around...

Thanks for the help. I'm going with Nexen N3000 265/35/18 for the rears only right now and got a decent price. Once the front wear out as well, I'll change them all out for a better tire. Thanks for the info.

i love the nexens... i've used them ever since i replaced the stockers... great for dd, drives great in the rain and grips well enough for me. and best of all, doesn't break my pockets every time i have to feed this monster tires.
i haven't heard of the problems with going wider on the fronts.
i use 245/40zr18 and 275/35zr18xl N3000

Speedo what speedo? LOL!
No issues with the fronts. I have noticed a very very little rub going up my driveway. I pulled the wheel and it's touching on the inside of the wheel well about a inch long. It's not hitting the outer fender. No issues under full power or in a corner. My driveway is just a little steep at the bottom where it meets the street. I can live with it. Houston streets are really bad in town and I have had zero issues under normal driving. It only seems to happen in my driveway.
