question about offsets...
i've been trying to understand how offsets work, and i understand it for the most part but given that our cars have a limited offset we can work w/, would
19x8.5 +40
19x9.5 +40
work? and if anybody is feeling generous, how would that look compared to a wheel that would have +50 rear offset?
lets assume the wheels are cast (yes, i know) w/ a concave look...more concave or less?
thank you!

AFAIK
The biggest problem is with the rear
Example: +54 (stock, I think) will be closer to the body of the car while +40 will bet further away. Meaning +40 will stick out more.
But again it depends on the tires you will be using

Your rears would be a problem. I stuck my w203 Brabus reps that are 19 x 9.5 et41 with 265/30/19 rubber and it stuck out to the point where it would rub and probably distort the quarter panel if you were driving and hit a dip. Not a good thing.
The lower the offset number, the further is sticks outwards away from the car body.

19X9.5 40 OFFSET will not work with a 275 tyre.
I have 19x9.5 50 offset with a 275 and it fits with no rubbing but is very close to outer guard.
40 offset will stick out too far.
You have to watch wheel design also to make sure they clear brake calipers.

so it seems that going 19x9.5 +50 is the best bet.......
any difference because these are cast wheels (as opposed to forged) that im looking at?

tire size planning to use is
front 235/35/19
rear 265/30/19
rim size planning to purchase

I find it interest how all the people on this forum seem to compensate for lack of traction with more and more tyre width.
I personally would drop offset to push the wheel out the guard. Then lip the rear guard (push the inner edge upwards) to make more space or even flare it out a bit. Then instead of running a 275 on a 9.5, run a 245/40 with some stretch but an awesome quality tyre (even a semi slick)
That would be the way to go about it if you want to improve looks but maintain/gain traction.

bringing this back up...
question related to the lip...im assuming that a 19x10 wheel vs a 19x9.5 will have a slightly greater depth given the same offset and i know a few people here are running 19x10, but does the offset remain +50 (as it would be w/ 19x9.5), or would i have to go a little higher given the increased width?

I'm not sure how "deep" the lip is on mine. Haven't put them on yet, they're at the shop waiting for me. But I was told that I got up to 3" lip. With 9.5" I think you can get close to 3" or at least 2.5" if I got 3" on mine. But don't get concave rims, you will not get that much concavity with our offsets.

i think im gonna go 19x10 and a similar offset...i was thinking 20s, but im fairly particular about ride quality so i think i will stick to 19s
and yea, the wheels i spec'd up top arent going to work so i found something else![Smilie](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
what kind of wheels did you go w/?

If I remember correctly the forgestar rear wheels are 19X10 with a +45 offset, versus 54mm for stock.
Compared to stock: with the offset and extra width, you're looking at wheels sticking out 21.5mm or 0.86" more than the stock wheels. It's not that huge but it will not allow you to drop the car much. The reason the offset is higher is to leave some room for the wider wheels on the inside.
