Factory LSD? or Aftermarket?

So, I always hear the basics of an LSD, which is to help ensure that power gets spread evenly between the tires of the car to add better traction compared to an open diff. I also know that there are different LSDs out there.

Question is, is it worth looking for a C63 with factory installed LSD, which is a fair bit more expensive (around $4000 I think, because of all other stuff that is packaged in the LSD)? Or just get a non-LSD car and go the aftermarket route?

What kind of LSD does the factory provide? vs what is out there in the market?

Os Giken is the best out there but be ready to spend some extra cash. I say do it once and do it right =)

Is the factory option even Any good?

The recommended LSDs are 1 way? 1.5? 2?

My factory LSD is tight as a virgin, never lets me down. Always locks up doing U-turns, taking off from lights etc.

Perfect for donuts, powerslides, burnouts and hills runs.

I'm pretty sure it is, yes. I opted for the factory one for the pure reason that if I blow the box, I don't want MB telling me "sorry, you're LSD was the cause" - DENIED.

I think the MB LSD uses clutches (and a specific oil for LSD's) while a Quaife uses gears and as such uses regular MB diff oil.

That is a comparison of the Quaife with the stock differential not the LSD. Good information about the Quaife done by Superlubricity.

Here is a pic of the LSD that is available from MB for the C63 AMG.

Just click on the Limited Slip Differential link on the left side of the page.

Quaife is NOT the same (or even close) the AMG LSD option. The AMG LSD locks up only to 40% while Quaife uses a torque-biasing variable system able to lock up to 100% I believe. Quaife requires almost no maintenance while the AMG LSD does and have more parts that can wear out.

OS Giken is also 100% LSD and probably the best and most aggressive differential out there, but it is indeed very expensive. The Mercedes version was was co-developed by RennTech and OS Giken.

An LSD has two settings, open and locked. Please explain to me the difference between a "40%" locked LSD vs a "100%" locked LSD.

Normally with a stock open diff, when a rear drive wheel starts to spin, more torque is directed to that wheel....so all that happens usually is it keeps spinning.

With a limited slip...torque is directed to the rear drive wheel that is not spinning, i.e., the one that has traction. The percent of lock up is the amount of torque that is directed away from the spinning wheel to the wheel with traction. This varies between brands of limited slip diffs...up to 100% lock up.
