X PIPE VS STRAIGHT PIPE
Ive been speaking with a close friend of mine who is a master certified tech at Mercedes. I wanted to remove my resonators and I asked him if i should go with the x pipe or straight pipe. I was expecting him to say the X pipe but instead suggested getting a straight pipe due to a more free flowing exhaust path. He claimed that straight pipes are the only way to go on the C63. I trust him since he is a close friend and has worked on every single AMG, and knows these cars inside and out.
Can some one shed some light on this subject and give a couple of suggestions?

I am very surprised an MB mechanic told you that since the crossover pipe in built into the resonator. Removing the resonator and replacing them with straight pipes is fine but then the two exhaust banks have no way to balance themselves. I would recommend removing the secondary cats and leaving the resonator in place. You may get some drone in the cabin without the resonators. I still have my stock exhaust in place from the resonator back because the gains are minimal and the sound increases exponentially.

Without the resonator there will be considerable droning/resonance while cruising.........unless you are stomping the ***** out of it all of the time.
Without adequate exhaust gas volume(just cruising/not stomping) the exhaust pulses will start to collide and cause droning.

You can do straight pipes for removing the secondary cats since you leave the resonators that acts as an X pipe. Any worthy exhaust shop in FL can do this for a few hundred dollars but it may not be that easy in So Cal with your strict laws. Other forum members should be able to chime in.

Sorry the picture was so HUGE!![EEK!](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif)
We charge $995 for the cat delete and mating to the factory resonator.
If we can duplicate the ends that go into the resonator(we use the ends off of the original pipes) then we can duplicate this section for much less than that!

The x-pipe's original functionality was introduced when engines had carburetors to "equalize" the banks. Now, I use an the x-pipe for sound purposes only. If you use an X-pipe it should be as far forward as possible.
The torque that you supposedly "lose" would only be at the initial stab of the throttle and will never come into play again as you go through the gears!
You want to excavate the exhaust pulses and heat out of the engine as fast as possible for peak efficiency and that is with as little back pressure as possible. Stepping the exhaust is another way to increase efficiency and that is why we use 3" after the OEM ~2.75".
Hope this helps!
