2011 Mercedes Benz SLS AMG
for 6.3 AMG: k&N, BMC, or PiperCross

Which is the best air filter out of those three that any of you have used and tested. Which one gives more horsepower? or are they all somewhat the same? What gains did any of you see on the dyno?. I

I can personally verify that. When I took my pipercross filters out they each had tears on the rubber seals. Plus, they just didn't flow as much as air as even the stock paper filters. Switched to BMC...

I haven't had the stock filters in for some time, so can't really recall. I did notice an immediate difference in sound on the intake when I first fired it up with the BMCs. I'm hoping to get back on the dyno relatively soon, so maybe have some more info...Everyone I talked to about the BMCs swears by 'em, so go for it.

AFE Pro Dry S is also a fantastic solution and it is the #1 filter we recommend to all our customers. They flow just as well as other aftermarket filter but are 100% oil-free and do not damage MAS / HFM air sensors at all. They also clean with simple soap & water wash and are very affordable (usually $125-150 per pair). They will dyno roughly the same as other aftermarket high flow filters but without any of the problems that oil based filters create.

That's kind of what I had with my pipercross filters. The BMC fit perfectly on the air boxes, so above described issue shouldn't be a problem....but anyone can have problems...

I've run K&N's for years w/o issue. But, I read the instructions about cleaning and oiling the filter. I blame the problems with oiled media on the monkey applying too much oil and installing too wet, not the product itself. It works fine if used properly.

But, I'll consider the AFE's b/c they sound good and involve less work.

I've run BMC's for thousands of miles and I've checked the MAF's frequently and I've seen no oil residue at all.

I recently picked up some stock paper filters made by Mann (they cost like $16-$17) and although they are a little more quiet than BMC's they function great.

I'll try the AFE drys sometime.

At least 7 years of use with K&N on 3 different cars and many, many miles. No MAF foul. Why am I the exception?

Only Pro 5 R is oil based. The Pro Dry S isn't. Hover your mouse over the emblems on the site like the one you quoted and you'll get a brief description. Or you can choose the type of filter first and it'll have different descriptions for both.

The filters in those pictures initially fit perfectly as well, but after a few miles of spirited driving, the filters seem to detach and bend out of shape. I'm hoping it's an isolated incident but who knows

That is an install issue. You have to torque the air box bolts in a systematic way so you don't pinch the filter on one end which is what the SL65 owner did.

I thought Andy would actually know how to install air filters!

K&N oil ruining MAF's...............you are all clueless that beliive that!

Correct, they have both oil based and non oil based. As I recall, The pro dry has a much higher filtration rate at 99.6% where as convetional oil filters are typically only 98.2%. Stock papers are roughly 99.8%, but with charcoals its pretty much 100%.

The pro dry will protect you engine better as well so it really is the best of both worlds, all the pros of the oil based, but with superior filtration of the paper. The added benefit of not having to ever reoil then is yet another long term cost savings that nobody factors in when comparing oil vs Pro dry.

Hope that helps,
AMS

You're not the only one. I ran K&N's on my 2002 CLK430 for 55K miles, no MAF issues.

I've ran K&Ns on my current CLK55 AMG for 50K+ miles, no issues. Breathes much better on the fwys. Those 5.4L engines need to breathe!

I've got a Pipercross on my Coupe Fiat, and it roars like hell! My friends driving Alfa Romeo with an BMC, which isn't half as much as loud as mine Pipercross... A K&N is a silent whistler when you compare it to a Pipercross or a BMC

Stay away from Pipercross! Mine were very poorly manufactured and are coming apart after my first cleaning. Going to probably just go back to good ole papers

What about the AEM DryFlow filters? They have a bunch of applications for Mercedes. No oil, no MAF worries, right?
