In The Market For A Used C63 AMG

I'm looking for a used C63 AMG but there seem to be so many different options between the years its sometimes confusing.

I took a test drive today in a 2009 model that had a suede steering wheel. Does this mean it had the AMG Performance P30/31 package? And if it did, it is not the 30HP boost because those were only 2010+ correct?

Yes, MY2009 has P30 with the limiter removed but no boost in HP. However, P30 has a stiffer AMG suspension that P31 lacks. Also, the P30 should also comes with the LSD with is a stand alone option for the MY2010.

So if that car had the suede steering wheel, which package did it have?

And all I really want are the standard stuff, like real leather seats, xenon lights, navigation, etc. So which pckgs do I need for that stuff?

Most of the C63's you see will already be fully equipped with leather package, lighting package, multimedia package, convenience package, etc. The only packages that are usually "not" equipped may be the Keyless Go and the Performance package. MY2010-2011's P31 packages should come with alcantara (suede) steering wheel, stiffer suspension, speed delimiter, LSD (not the drug) and "481" horsepower, which in reality is more like 500-hp.

2008-2009 have a P30 option (brakes, suspension, 19" wheels, LSD. but no HP boost). My 2010-2011 have P31 option (forged internals more HP/TQ) LSD is was a seperate optional. While most of the cars had most of the other options (NAV, Full leather etc) you can still find some 2009 that were ordered with very few options. I'd try and find a 2010 P31 car.

Thanks guys,

Another thing, I'm still new to buying cars (this is my first purchase, I've previously just driven cars that my parents did not use).

I can't seem to find any 2008s that are CPO at MB dealers, only 2009. So if I want to go 2008 I will have to go with a private seller.

How does warranty come into play in this case? And can I still finance the car through a private seller, is that ok?

You can find your own loan and interest rates through banks, credit unions, etc. Most of the time, their rates will be equal to or better than MB's, especially on AMG's. Once you have been approved for a loan, they (the bank you're financing through) will issue a check or payment to whomever you buy the car through, be it a dealership or private seller.

remember 08's had the configurator problem where the perf packs were partial,incomplete and all kinds of weird combinations. wheel ,limiter removed but no lsd, suspension. no wheel but lsd, limiter, suspension etc.. cant remember is any of that bled over into the 09's though. so just because it says p30 you need to physically check everything to make sure.

I would get at least a MY2010 or 2009 if you can get a good deal. And no, you cannot tell P30 vs. P31 visually with the steering wheel, rather P30 has yellow brakes vs. red for P31. Also P31 has a silver air box cover for the engine.

what did mb do to pick up the 30hp on the 10-11 models with the p31 package? is it a flash or is it hard parts as well? and if its a flash and/or hardparts, are these options available to 08-09 owners now at the dealership? if it matters i have the full p30 getup on my 09.

I have a CPO 2008 with 37k on the clock that I am thinking about selling. I did some research and the CPO warranty transfers if one private party sells it to another.

The motor can handle the extra power up to a point as it's the same in the AMG E and S class. Do lots of research on several tuners and do not go nuts trying to get the last once of power of of it. You should be fairly safe with a basic tune, as most tunes do several things, a more aggressive timing curve, injector timing, and increases in fuel delivery. Custom tunes can be had that assume, high flow cats, secondary cat deletes, resonator deletes, high flow mufflers, higher octane gas, etc. However the more HP/TQ you make the less reliability in the motor. Also think when adding additional power the stress on other components, such as engine cooling, tranny cooling, brakes etc. In warmer weather at a track most stock C63's with overheat their brakes and tranny after a few hot laps. The stock engine basically overpowers the other components of the car. (This is not uncommon in most AMG except the Black Series that have additional cooling and brake capacity to deal with the extreme conditions present at a track.) For the street you don't need to worry about these things because you never push the car that hard for that long.
