Paint Scratch to Bare Metal - Damn Shopping Carts
Hi all,
Had my MY09 C63 for 3.5 years and have kept it immaculate and treated it with the most utmost care (I even made sure I dealer serviced it).
Just started thinking about selling it in the next couple of months (less than 15k miles)...when some jerk bumped their shopping cart into the driver's-side door.
There is no dent, but there is a 1/8th square inch chip down to bare metal, plus 3 'white' scratches about 3/4's of inch.
Unfortunately, I don't feel comfortable trying to sort the chip myself - the car is parked in my apartment's indoor car park, and it is pretty cold this time of year in North NJ.
As I'm planning to sell the car, I would like to do the best 'bang for your buck' job possible (so would want to avoid getting the entire door repainted). The car is 040 black (e.g. non-metallic) so I'm hoping that some kind of spot repair would be possible.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated - I'm contemplating taking it to the dealer (mucho dinero I think), but it is worth taking the car to MAACO - of coruse each franchise is different, but I'm assuming I would get a professional looking at it rather than a 17 year old apprentice mechanic? I'm preparing myself for a $500 bill - does that sound reasonable?
Thanks in advance guys!
Will

Sorry to hear about that. I really dont think its worth painting the door for a little chip and it would be best to just fill it in.
Would you happen to have some pics of the damage?

I had a few hood chips and went to a small paint shop ,,here's what happened
first thing was he mixed black and clear in about 1/2 teaspoon ea. then took a small brush and put a drop on each chip,, oh that few turned out to be 17 of them. then he told me to come back tomorrow,,,
when i got there the next day took about 1/2 hour for him to get to me ...
he then took a razor blade taped off each side with masking tape,,(left the center still ready to cut,,
he then scraped the hump down,,I though i was going to shoot him, as he scraped each chip hump(because of the bubble of paint he put there the day before) the scraps were 1 to 2" square,, once the paint was level he took polishing compound ,rubbed it in then took a special polish,,to it then wax,,, I was dumfounded,, you can not find any of those chips,,, cost was $150.00 I guess in NJ that would be $450.00 Now you have the rest of the story. jim

Thanks for the swift replies.
@_AMG_ - I will take some photo's this evening and post them on this thread - hopefully, my tears won't fog-up the lens of the camera too much...
@rory_breaker - that's what I was suspecting, I will do some trawling on the forum/google to see if there are any recommended paint shops
@amx1397 - that's exactly the kind of treatment I would like - simple and effective (and carried out by someone who know's what the're doing) - hopefully I can find a similar paint-wizard up here!

You may want to talk to some detailers. A paint shop makes money painting cars, so most of them are going to default to... painting it. A detailer makes their living fixing blemishes, so they're going to default to... fixing the blemish. A good detail guy can at least recommend some body shops that are more apt to take care of the little blemish than wanting to paint the whole door.

go to your dealer and ask them if they have a guy that paints by airbrush...
usually does a decent job on small damage - won't be perfect, but it'll get the job done at a fraction of the price...hopefully your car is a non-metallic color.

I went to my dealers body shop, and asked for a small container of paint that matches my paint job.. problem solved, no cost to me... It is really just a large nail polish like container and brush.
I lost it *DOH* my hood is full of paint chips
DC driving at its worst.

Good idea. I had a bumper scratch years ago...my dealer turned me on to the guy they hire out to do their touch up work...he has stock MB colors...I had my damaged paint sanded, prepped, painted, clear coated and buffed in one day for about $200.

Sting1980, I had a pretty deep scratch last month by some falling debris on the fwy and I fixed it myself.

Fantastic - thanks for all of the responses.

Try to sell the car with the scrape, and tell the guy that you will repair it before he/she picks it up. This way they get a car in pristine condition.
On one of my previous cars, I did some paint work to repair door dings. It was an excellent job, and very few people could tell it was painted. However, in every inspection, they took out a paint machine and could tell it was painted. I lost a couple potential customers because they thought it was in a side impact collision...
