Brake HOLD feature

Just discovered a feature I didn't know my car had. After coming to a complete stop at a stop light, if you quickly tap on the brakes again, it activates the "HOLD" function and a HOLD light pops up on the display. It will hold the car without you holding down the brake pedal. And it simply releases when you accelerate. My BIL's GL has it and he was asking me if I did. Just found out I did. Can come in handy at times I guess.

Is this a newer model thing? Or would an 09 have it?

I think this is a facelift only feature my 2011 doesn't seem to want to do this. I know the hold message on the dash is for sure a 2012 and up only thing.

It's called brake assist I believe. If we are talking about the same thing. If you are on an incline sufficient to overcome the vehicles natural forward motion when not using the brakes and in gear, the brakes will hold until you hit the accelerator. On steep inclines it works well, on mild inclines, I have noticed the hold does not stay active, and if you are not paying attention the car may inch forward and rear end someone...

I have an 09 model and it does this, but no light on the dash.

Mine is a 2012 coupe. It is different from the hill assist. This basically just frees your foot up at stoplights from having to hold the brake pedal.

Ahh, k, you learn something new everyday...

Seems like a lazy mans tool.. and honestly.. a bad idea, teaching drivers to pay less attention to what they are doing with their brake foot...

I wouldn't call it a lazy mans tool. Its extremely useful at lights and I thought it was gimmicky when I first got the car, but I have been using it at pretty much any stoplight since then and when I am not driving my car I find myself doing it in other cars and then annoyed that I have to hold my foot down on the brake at lights, lol.

Basically, come to a complete stop, push brake pedal down again, HOLD light comes on dash. Press gas or brake pedal again to disengage.

On a 2010 the Brake Assist System (BAS) operates in emergency situations. When you apply the brakes very quickly the BAS applies full brake boost automatically potentially reducing braking distance.

The 2010 has Hill-start assist, on uphill grades, that holds the car for ~ 1 second after the brake is released so you can start off smoothly. The trans has to be in D or R and just hold the brake.

Exactly, The hold feature is totally different from this. you can deactivate hold by pushing the gas or pushing the brake down again.

My 2011 E Class has it and I love it. The E is my DD and I do quite a bit of city driving. It's all electronic so there is no feeling of getting off the brake or a gear shift. Good job on this Mercedes.

Harsh jvanbrecht, think of it as 'cruise control' braking at red lights

Came here looking for anyone else who figured it works on the pre-fl cars haha!!! Mine does this if I am on a hill and push on the brake hard and back off then hard again. Nothing to show it's in the HOLD feature though.

I'm assuming they changed that. Mine said "HOLD" under the speedometer. Guess they added that feature in facelift. Can't imagine what they were thinking not adding that to the pre-FL. How would you even know...

Brake Hold function only applies to facelifted W204 (2012 and up). The Adaptive Brake Function on the pre facelift model is a totally different system to the Brake Hold function on the facelifted car.

Still, it does the hold, pre fl.
In mine you have to select manual though, once you do, it will stay there without touching the brake for as long as you want.

Wow. Had no idea it could do this. I guess it's not really that big a deal but it keeps making me wonder what else it can do that hasn't yet been documented. This needs to be added to the thread with the tips/secrets.

When the car is stopped and your foot on the brake then firmly add more pressure with your foot to the break pedal and it will automatically apply (you'll see it light up in the dash). You can now take your foot of the break and the car will stay on the breaks and if you want to get moving again then just accelerate.

Haha, good thinking.

Try it at different times after you come to a stop...examples:

  • Creep to a stop then apply hard pressure directly after stopping.
  • Start creeping to a stop and still while creeping some, apply hard pressure.
  • Come to a stop, wait to the count of 5 then apply hard pressure.
  • Come to a stop, wait to the count of 5 then creep the car forward some, then apply hard pressure.
If none of those work, you could always try disconnecting the battery and seeing if that will reset it. If nothing else, take it to the dealer and see if it is something that can be toggled on and off.
