Factory LSD Diff.: Cooling fins?

Hi all,

My '13 sedan has the LSD (option 471) and I have read that it is supposed to have cooling fins on the differential case. Mine has a flat cover in back and some support ribs and it looks like cast iron but no fins that I can see. Bear in mind that I was looking at it while laying on my garage floor so I couldn't see the whole unit. Does anyone have photos of the unit or know if it indeed has cooling fins?

Doesn't have to have cooling Fins.

Mine doesn't have any fins. Just a cast iron pumpkin like you described yours.

Thanks for the quick reply Kriston. So the housing is cast iron then?

This is how it looks like with the fins.

I'm not too sure why yours have no fins but I think it comes with it from the get go

My 2013 with the LSD does not have fins.

My 2006 E55 does.

There is about 1.3 quarts of oil in that gear case. Not much at all. I could see how the cooling fins would be a real benefit.

In Oz, all the C63's have fins on diff.
Mine has LSD and has fins (2010), and my friends 2010 (no LSD) also has fins. (both cars pre-update)

I will take a pic and post up

Very interesting,

I pulled my Diff out of a 2011 Affalterbach edition C63 Sedan. it has no Fins on it. Im curious to know why some came with the fins and others didn't.

Thanks to one and all for the insightful info on this topic. I too am curious as to why some would come with the finned back cover and others would not, especially if they are equipped the same (p31/LSD, etc.). I read where during a magazine (don't recall which one) test of the C63 it "spilled its diff fluid on the track" after several laps so it would seem that the fins would really help. Wonder what it would cost to purchase them.

You are looking probably at $500 new. 300 for the pumpkin cover + 150 for the heatsink + labor.

Aussie factory delivery non LSD but it came with the finned housing cover fitted - happy to have every little bit of assistance for my WaveTrac.

I have a 2010 sedan and no fins on mine either. All the others ones ive seen here in the bay area dont have fins on them either. What i have noticed E class and above (e, cls, s, sl) do have fins.

I did talk to dealer about installing them as i could on my quaife diff, the only problem is they hang even lower than the whole exhaust system, and with my car being dropped, i dont want to risk having my fins break by scraping someting.
