Takata Strikes Again..

Surely y'all read the same news outlets as I do, but just in case.
http://www.autoblog.com/2016/02/10/m...akata-recalls/

I was always curious who makes the airbags for our cars, looks like the same guys who make em for everyone else.

From the article: Daimler has a recall for 841,000 vehicles in the US, including 705,000 from Mercedes-Benz and 136,000 from the company's van division.
Reuters reports the affected models consist of 2005-2014 examples of the SLK-Class, C-Class, E-Class, M-Class, GL-Class, R-Class, and SLS-Class.

The vans comprise the 2007-2014 models of the Dodge, Freightliner, and Mercedes Sprinter.

It's obviously new news, and I haven't seen a letter on this from MBUSA yet, but it looks like we're getting caught up in all this too. Anyone seen any more info?

As always, be safe out there!

Cheers,

I ran my VIN on the MBUSA recall website, and this does not come up. I wonder how long it will take, or if it simply does not include the AMGs?

Which air bag is it? I assume the driver airbag. I looked up a few articles and they just mention airbag and not which one.

Also they mention the c class.. I'm sure c63 is included in that

I brought my highly modified Evo 9 to the dealer after 10 years ownership for the takata recall last summer. They had to dismantle the dashboard to a degree. I was lucky in that the only casualty was a fog light button that was easily fixed.
I'd be afraid to bring the C63 into the dealer for an airbag recall since they'll probably need to dismantle the dashboard too. I've been lucky that I have no squeaks, creaks, or rattles but no guarantee that I get it back without extra noises.

We've been talking about this and I don't know of any AMGs yet affected by this recall. Don't know if it has something to do with the wheels not being part of the main run? Or if it is just a matter of time

Since I work at a company that supplies (other) parts to the Tier I auto suppliers, we saw today that there is possibly a government-mandated recall of all Takata airbags. The government is thinking (?) that there are too many deaths to date, and some of these deaths resulted from failure of airbags not on any of the recall lists so far.

Also, for some model cars, the other airbags may yet be recalled. They are simply recalling the driver bags first, as that is where the injuries and deaths have been reported. The same inflators are being used in airbags at other positions, but the injury rate isn't enough (yet) to warrant a recall.

One article I read stated that given the current production capacity in the industry, it will take 5 years or more to produce enough parts to repair all of the cars currently under recall, while also meeting current new vehicle production needs.

Time to refill the popcorn bowls, folks. This is going to be a long one.

I think you are probably right. And why shouldn't ALL Takata air bags using the suspect inflation device be recalled. The potential to be harmed or killed by passenger or side air bags can't be overlooked just because the "numbers" don't yet support it. Who gets to make that decision?

From a airbag supplier and auto manufacturer stand-point, this is a nightmare. Suppliers simply don't have the capacity to handle the demand.

But that may not be the worst of it. Suppose that the recall does include ALL Takata airbags. That could involve taking apart your dash, your door, maybe the A-pillar, and even the seat. I'm not quite sure I understand why it is taking so long to identify the defective units, but I know I won't be a happy camper if my car is torn apart, even for safety sake.

Suggest anyone who really wants to know that they check the NHTSA site (http://www.safercar.gov) BY VIN and MBUSA by VIN. I checked both and my 2010 E350, RWD is not on any recall lists - so far. I also confiremed it with a reps at MBUSA Customer Assistance.
But, it just may be a matter of time before every car made in past 10 years is recalled. Then we can watch the auto industry and Takarta collapse. Not to mention never being able to get your car in for anything else to be fixed. Dealerships will be spending 100% of time just replacing air bags.
