Intake manifold cleaning/catch can

Have some time off so thought I'd take my intake off and clean it out, was quite a lot of crude in it

Everything cleaned up fairly easily
Was literally oil pooling in areas of the manifold, I noticed closer to the pcv valve had more noticeable amounts of oil/pooling as you got further from it, it was more of a dry caked on crud

Nice job. Did you remove the throttle bodies when you cleaned, or leave them in place? What was your method, did you just spray a crap ton of brake cleaner in there, or soak it, or what? I'm about to install phenolic spacers, so am going to do this over the weekend probably.

Took apart the pcv valve and fitting a catch can should be a lot easier then I figured.... Both the pcv valve and the connection to the crankcase have barbed and rubber o ringed ends that measure out to the same as -10 hose so you should be able to just fit some -10 hose onto each and a catch can in between and save a few $100 on the Weistec setup

I took the throttles out as well they weren't too bad, yea maf cleaner but only because I had some sitting here brake cleaner probably work better...
Sprayed a **** ton then used some long length of blue shop towels to pull from one end of the runners through to the other end

For clarification please, where is the oil leaking from into the intake manifold? From a bad gasket? Or just a design flaw and the reason for a catch can?

thanks

The oil isn’t leaking from anywhere it’s sucked up as a mist/vapor from the pcv valve cia the vacuum from the intake manifold it then hits parts of the intake and gradually pools up or gets re burnt by the engine

Not only does it make your intake dirty, but that oil introduced into the intake also slightly lowers the effective octane of the burn.

Ok thanks everyone. I also saw in the post where fcpeuro sells the kit with new PCV valve. Looks to be priced well.

I'm in the process of cleaning mine out right now as well. I really would like to fit a catch can considering how absolutely disgusting the inside of my intake is at 140,000km. My intake ports have a lot of gunk buildup as well. Luckily the valves and their seats are clean as a whistle, as well as the injectors, but everywhere else is filthy.

Thanks

Doesn’t that go into the y pipe? The canister in the middle.

Hey guys. About to do this job. Do you all recommend unbolting the throttle bodies for this job as well? Is it necessary? If so, do we need to replace any other gasket besides the intakes? Looks like there is a rubber gasket behind the throttle bottle plate.

Lastly, has anyone replaced the rubber gasket at the end of the intake/air box y-pipe? Part number?

Thanks

In my other car with an M272 engine the bushings for the flaps inside the manifold got worn out, one thing to consider if mounting a catch can.

Bumping an old thread. Going to be taking off my intake manifold for inspection/cleaning this weekend. I've ordered new gaskets for intake to heads, as well as new MB intake bolts. Questions are:

1. Can the gasket on the throttle plate be re-used if in good shape? If not, anyone have a part number?
2. Can the hardware be re-used that secures the throttle plate? Anyone have a torque spec?
