Rattling noise under acceleration?
Hey everyone, I'm hoping you can help me diagnose an issue I'm having with my 2012 C63 Coupe, 70,000km, no modifications.
Under moderate acceleration I can hear a rattling noise coming from the engine bay for 2-3 seconds when the car is under load. The noise isn't present accelerating from a stop or at idle.
No error messages, oil changed a few months ago. I live in Vancouver and it is quite cold right now, the car running at regular temp levels still has the noise.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thank you all for your time.

Cheap gas? Gas that is not up to the octane rating required? Sounds like pre-detonation to me which will come if you use gas with a lower octane rating than specified in your manual and on the filler door of the gas tank which to the best of my knowledge in all MB cars is 91. Cheap out on 89 or 87 and eventually you will wreck the engine.

Is the rattle coming FROM the engine, or just that area? Could be as simple as a loose exhaust heat shield.

The rattle is coming from the engine bay - not necessarily the engine. Is there an easy way to check if the exhaust heat shield could be loose or does the car need to be on a lift?

I had a rattling noise like you describe after a stealer service, after gearbox filter was also changed. Turns out they left the heat shield for the box just laying on on the exhaust so it would resonate at a certain RPM.

Hi,
i also live in Vancouver , have a 2012 c63 sedan with 77k on it. Mine also pings when I accelerate from low (1500 or so) rpm. Seems to only be noticeable when I run 91 octane. Try 94 and see if it goes away.
Question for you... when I commute in traffic my oil temp routinely sits up between 105-110 degrees. Putting it in sport or sport + in downtown traffic makes it even warmer. What are you seeing in your car?

Coqc63 - I have a 2012 sedan and my oil temps are about 107C under normal conditions. If I run it in S+ or M and keep the revs up it runs up to 112-115C quite quickly. If I run it hard it gets up to 120C+. These types of temperatures are pretty normal for a FL C63.

Thanks. Does your oil cooler fan come on around 111-115? Man are they loud, sounds like a vacuum!

I am experiencing the same with my e350 (120 000 km) the noise come between 1400-1800rpm .
I have tried to put on and off start&stop, the A/C, Changed the Transmission oil with new filter , but nothing has changed.
Im thinking now of puting a Gropro under the car to have a better idea .
thank you all in advance

I got some bad gas (stopped at a highway station instead of my regular Shell, BP or Mobil). Moderate load—1500 rpms or heavy acceleration—3000 rpms. No CEL and I’ve run a couple bottles/tanks with Techron and it’s diminishing but I still hear a ping or two.
My mech says it can take quite a while to purge the bad gas from the tank. I’m on tank 5 or 6 now.
YMMV.

I had a rattling (metal rattling against metal sound) while driving low RPM. Turns out my mechanic didn't fully tighten an exhaust bracket and the nut fell off.
It's something to check.
