DIY Radiator Block Off Plate
Materials Needed
1. Start by cutting out a cardboard template. The more time you spend here the less frustrating the whole experience will be. It take several iterations to get it perfect. I decided to use polycarbonate since it is available in most warehouses, it not expensive, easy to cut and relatively light. 1/8" inch thickness is perfect for this project.
You can search the c63 forum and find a paper template posted that is really closed to the final fit.
2. Trace your template and cut using a jigsaw. Remember to cut inside the lines traced if you are using a thick marker. Use a file to round up corners and get rid of sharp edges.
3. Test fit and adjust as needed. You can do this without removing the grill. If you did it right the front edge of the plate will slide in the center grill fin.
- Cardboard
- Scissors
- Marker
- Polycarbonate Plate 7.5 x 30 x 1/4"
- Jigsaw
- File
- Double Sided Tape 3M 3/8"

4. Anti-lift plate to hold in place. The radiator block of plate sits on the top of the ac condenser at the back. On the front you need the anti-lift plate to hold in position although the front of the plate slides inside the center fin of the grill. I have seen other people use a couple of water hose clamps to hold in place the front; but I went fancy fabricated a bushing that I will slide in the support rod and attached the anti-lift plate to it.

5. Sit back and enjoy! It took me around 3 hours and spend 25 buck on it.
I was considering wrapping it with carbon fiber paper, but I like the white on white color though,

I can't seem to be able to find the template for it..
Are the dimensions different between FL and PFL? What about with Distronic?

First modification since I purchased my 2013 C63 coupé two weeks ago. Installed the radiator block off plate. Made of black perspex and I made a slight twist to the panel. Covered the underside with some gold sheeting I had hanging around my garage. Job finished and now need to get out and see what difference it makes to the temp.
Gold sheeting on the underside
Installed and looking from below
Without the front grille, so much easier to install
Installation completed
Temperatures I was seeing the other day in Celsius BEFORE installation and it was relatively cool weather

Just wanted to saw thank you to @jaimejrivera and @DRBC43AMG for posting their block off plates.
Used this knowledge to make my own after 3 cardboard templates. Having access to template cardboard or really thin cardboard will help this process.
Before block off plate
During Install with 1/8 inch ABS and cardboard template
After block off plate install matches the gloss black on the grill pretty nicely
Thanks again to everyone sharing game on MBWorld!!

Anyone tried if it affects the topspeed of the car?
As i am afraid it might block off important airpressure in front of the radiators that are pushing air into intake.

Haven't tried any top speed runs as doing this on the public road will probably get me in serious trouble or jail very quickly, but I can confirm that with top cover and upgraded oil cooler, I have never seen the temperatures of either oil and water go above 93-95°c for water and 110-112° for oil regardless of traffic conditions and/or hard alpine road driving. Never measured air flow or pressure, as this would need sensors etc.

It helps redirect air where it needs to be and provides better ventilation of heat and air and subsequently lowers operating temps for the water and oil in your car...simply put.
"Needed" is relative to your application of your car.
If you plan on driving this car around a track (which is not what this car was designed for when it was made) then this will probably be a great benefit or if you live in a super warm climate.

The block off plate is helpful for anyone who ever drives their C63 spiritedly and sees oil ever go over say 250F. Period. It’s a fact.
And your repetitive snide comments about people tracking these cars are irritating as ***. Why do you even care. If you knew how to extract the potential from your “house wife” car you’d change your pea-sized mind about it maybe.
Or if you had spent time on a track ever maybe you could educate us exactly which manufacturers “design their cars for track” and then compare that to what’s actually out there on track and let us know how wrong you are. I can tell you from plenty of real world practical experience that a C63 can be much much faster around some of the best tracks in North America than these “track built” cars you’re obsessed about.
Go away troll

Actually it keeps air from rolling up over the radiator and pushing hot air into the intakes. You were kinda close not really.

Yes, this plate does change the ventilation and allows lower operating temps.
Yes, this has an application in a track format for a car that was not designed for a track and warmer areas of the world.
Does that member need this mod? That's his choice. It was an answer to his question "WHY IS IT NEEDED."
Its called reading, top to bottom, left to right. A group of words makes a sentence, take some advil and some midol.
No matter how hard you try, we aren't sleeping together so just let it go.
So glad I just found the ignore user option on this forum.

Reporting in, seeing about a 5 to 10 degree F lower operating temperature after installing my block off plate. One day I may do some testing with and without the plate to have hard numbers but I am seeing a decrease in temps so I am happy
Cheers

You are mentioning oiltemp and watertemp, they would stay the same as i figured it?
Rgds.

Yes the blockplate is there to help stop the hot air from the radiators flowing upwards to be sucked into the intake scoops. Probably also gets a better flow into the radiators. I did see an improvement with lower water and oil temps with the blockplate in place.
