Smaller pipes have faster velocity at lower flow, possibly the 451hp version c63 got more midrange from smaller Y than it lost it top end. The 507hp e63 could probably use the extra flow.
Probably a very good mod if you already have tune and headers or tune other mods.
Same reason you don’t put a 6 inch exhaust on a car.
For another car example
The bmw m60 v8 had large intake runners and it was updated in the M62 to smaller runners as it gained 20nm through 2000rpm of mid range vs giving up 15hp over 500rpm.

There was a design change in 2008 or 09 that has a black vaccum box that sits Inbetween the y pipe. That line goes to the throttle bodies and has serious vaccum there. I'm not sure why the added a box to hold some air or better yet let the car have a little air and then get no vaccum but I'm sure it's for emissions.
The r63,ml63 and e63 were also rated 520hp and also have 3in exh piping
Also the only car that had the m156 was the c63 from like 2010 to 2015 so mb probably needed to comply with usa smog testing.
The brakes vacuum reserve is in the Master Cylinder Power Brake actuator. Larger volume than this.
I wonder what this plenum extension will do to the fuel trims. Then again, the Renntech piece doesn't come with a tune, right? Which means that the ECU can adapt to it.
Tried to order a new E63 / ML63 vacuum canister and was SOL. Apparently they are no longer produced and MB's answer is to ship the newer Y-Pipe in place of the older vacuum canister. Silver lining is that I have a brand new OE Y-Pipe assembly that cost me half of what it's usually priced at.
@skratch77 , your OP showed that you initially removed the plastic canister but a later post shows you switched to the older canister. Why did you move away from the first solution?

I ended up finding one on ebay . I tested with and without the canister and the engine is a lot louder without it. I wanted to be as oem as possible and the few homemade canisters were not good at all. It can be done if you use something that is strong and tight but I just wanted the oem version.

Makes sense, thank you. Where did the external canister bolt on for you? (Hoping there's a factory spot for it on newer M156s.)
