Is this the dreaded cam tick?
Hi All,
My C63 has 89,000kms on it. At about 50,000kms the lifters were done, I started it up this morning and it sounded like this (video taken about 30 seconds - 1 minute after cold start), is this normal or the cam adjusters? It seemed particularly loud today. No CEL or codes.
Thanks!

A sign of cam adjuster issues is a rattle on startup. It also sounds very different than the hydraulic lifters.
Some of these M156 engines are just noisier than others. Doesn't automatically mean there is a problem.

Does your engine quiet down once fully at temperature?

Mine had that noise as it got older. I recently changed the plugs, coils and injectors and I no longer have that tick.

There is some lifter noise in the first video but not in the second (there is an additional ticking noise in the first video that is not just the normal injector pulsing).
The question here is not whether the engine is cold or warm, but rather how long it has been sitting before you fired it up. *ALL* C63s will make some lifter noise if you let them sit for a while (several days on the ones withe the early-style lifters to a couple of weeks on the ones with the newer "SLS" lifters) as any residual oil drains and it then takes a few minutes for the lifters to fully pressurize. Seeing as you have no lifter noise in the second video, I wouldn't worry about it as it is not happening during normal engine operation.

It hadn’t been sitting too long, I think two days at most. Good to know it sounds normal, hard to know since it’s my first M156 car. Thanks!

I have a 2010 with 106K on it that makes the exact same noise. All of my forum reading tells me these cars just make that noise some say it gets louder with age. Some guys have changed everything out (Cam wise) and it still makes the noise lol. I will myself be changing the injectors and plugs soon more for my own piece of mind and I don't believe they have been done yet.
Let me know if yours is still making this louder than normal tick.
