Near death experience on the freeway with dashcam

Hey car fam!

So far owning this cars has been both good and bad. I’m getting to understand the need for a dash cam. I had my fair share of people changing lanes, forcing me off the freeway and into the grass. A few times I almost die as there wasn’t anywhere to go with heavy traffic and being on twisty mountain roads. Any recommendations for dash cam that doesn’t drain the car batteries?

Fair share of being forced off the freeway into grass????

I think you need to change the way you drive. Please. A dashcam won't save your life.

my driving is fine, I don’t cut anyone off, I don’t stay in people blind spot... I usually leave enough space for others to change lane. I drive in traffic a lot and a lot of times people are on the phone and change lane without looking or driving in the middle of the lane. It was heavy traffic on the right lane and people driving way close. It’s either crash into them or go in the grass. I just need a dash cam to record in case **** hit the fan. Where I live I see crazy accident every week so that should tell you how reckless some people drive.

I mean if by fair share you mean once or maybe twice, then fine. In my personal opinion there is no 'fair share' of needing to go off the side of the highway. I live in the LA area. We have some real morons here too, but there's no grass on the side of the highway. If you somehow go off to the side, you're falling 30 feet onto the street below lol.

Definitely get a dash cam so theres no ambiguity should someone cut you off and cause an accident. Knock on wood you don't need it.

I ride a motorcycle and have had people change lanes into the space I occupy but it is pretty rare that I really need to do much to avoid an accident. I did get clipped once on the freeway but I didn’t go down and no injury or damage to my bike. Never have I had to take to the grass or concrete divider to avoid an accident in my C63 or on the bike.

New Orleans east interstate is very crazy. No police monitoring the traffic (not enough police for the neighborhoods so traffic is a low priority.) 100 mph is not unusual. Often done by a group of cars cutting through traffic with a couple feet to spare.

You ride a bike, you are invisible. Even when they still make eye contact with you sometimes it still doesn't register with them.

Well to start, for MB, do NOT hard wire the dash camera directly to the battery.. for that matter, you should not really direct connect anything to the battery (aftermarket) ..
(so either wire it to switched power - so its only on/recording when car is on, or get some of the external battery packs that charge up while driving, and run the cameras when car is off)

I use a Blackvue 900+ (front and rear) with 2 battery packs (for parking mode recording)

Dashcams really only drain battery in parking mode depending on your setting. If you really care about parking mode recording I would recommend Thinkware U1000 dashcam. All Thinkware dashcams have voltage regulators so when setting up your dashcam you can set at which voltage to have your dashcam completely shut down. Also the U1000 has energy saving mode 2.0 so your camera has up to 26 days on parking recording before completely shutting down. I run the Thinkware Fa200 which is a great entry level dashcam.

Cars are pretty safe these days, someone cutting you off probably isn’t a enough to be considered a “near death experience” princess.

Most of the voltage regulators are crap, and cause more issue's then what they are worth.. plus the extra work on your MB battery.. Trust me, if your wanting "parking mode" recording (or recording when your car is turned off) then get an extra battery pack, that mounts in the car, its better to let that think charge and decharge all it wants, then to put the load , etc on your car battery.

An external battery pack is much cheaper then a new battery for your MB, plus the hassle if your car battery drains down, and or goes into (s) limp.. etc etc..

I highly doubt that. Ever drive the freeways in Los Angeles during rush hour? I used to work in the car rental business in L.A. too.
