Oil Change

hi guys

I was wondering how often your oil is changed. I was told that they change it at service intervals at the dealership.

I have an '02 CL500 and the manual says every 15,000 miles under ideal conditions. This is absolutely absurb as any MB tech will tell you. I don't go longer than 5000 between changes. Use the recommended synthetic oil.

i had a 01 M3 and an 03 M5

i changed the oil after the recommended 1100 mile break in period. after that oil was changed in 10k mile intervals. when i watched the oil being drained, it only looked a little darker than when it was put in. i was just wondering if MB works the same way.

Change mine every 5k. I am just of the mind that you can't over change the oil. If you keep your CL long term you should have a lot better compression in the long run.

I change mine every 15k

If you do a search on Yahoo, they did an article about synthetic oils, which are made to have no molecular defects and will not START breaking down until around 15K miles. That is when it actually stops being at 100% peak performance. Changing your oil any sooner is a waste to your pocket and a waste to the environment. I also watched on the History Channel a full hour long show on how synthetic oil is made and how it is so perfect without any crevices in the atoms and this is why synthetic oils DO NOT BREAK DOWN like conventional oils. Do what you want but Synthetic oil does not age and does not start loosing viscosity until it starts hitting around 15k miles. If you do not believe me watch the show and read the articles. They were saying that it purely a scam for consumerism and a total waste of money. If these quick lubes told the truth they would be out of business. Listen do you think MBZ would have gone to Mobil 1 and Jaguar as well if they didn't believe in the product and tested it before putting in the manual 15k miles? They have a 10-12 and 15k formula. So, do what you want but why waste time, money and resources.

Syn oil (Specifically Mobil 1 0W40) does not break down easily. The thing that you will find however is that it gets pretty dirty. The tiny filter that Mercedes uses is the weak link.

With that said, I have witnessed the MB Service vehicles get upwards of 150,000+ miles without incident. These service vehicles follow the factory oil change period of 10,000 miles.

Changing your oil early certainly wont hurt other than in the wallet.

I personally changed my oil at ~1,000 miles, then every 5,000 miles. Around 50,000 miles I started changing in accordance with the factory at 10,000 miles.

Agreed! My thought process is to put in the 15k high mileage synthetic Mobil 1 and just change the filter every 7,500 miles. The factory fleece filter catches almost 100% of all the dirt anyway. This way you don't have to do an oil change. On a 600 and 65 2003 up it uses a sump pump system and uses about 12 or more quarts. That is what I was just told from my service adviser at the dealership. I have never kept one long enough until now to do a service so now that I have a driver I will be changing mine about every 7 or 8 years. LOL. I just don't put miles on any car. If I put 1k miles on a car a year that is pushing it. That is why all of my cars are on a Grundy collector policy and I have a 25k mile 96 LT1 Roadmaster Wagon stated as my driver for regular insurance. Then I piggy back all my collector and exotic cars on that policy for almost NOTHING with "0" deductible and no limitations for driving except commute to work and since I do not work, it isn't an issue. Everyone should try it. They will only take exotics and semi-exotics if they are new or newer. No other insurance company will do that. I think I pay 200 per car for stated value. I have them declared high value but it sure beats paying 3,500 a year for each one plus a deductible.

hi, i do between 5-6000 miles a year, so in reality i need an oil change about every 2 years, but mercedes recommends changing oil every 10,000 miles, or 1 year. is the 1 year time period valid and anything to be concerned about?
thanks

Again, I it is a ploy to make money. I have cars that have full Synthetic oil in them and I haven't changed the oil for 5 or more years. The oil still smells fresh, no gasoline odor and I run the car at least once a month to keep everything going, and I think for me it's mileage not time. Oil knows no time. Now if you have a really old car that the rings are bad then yes, I would change it once a year but with a low miles car, it really isn't necessary. As for brake fluid, every two years for sure. Brake fluid is like a moisture sponge and will break down from heat and cold and become a rust and sludge magnet. Change it regularly.
