ABC & PS Filters

Hi guys,

I have an 02 CL500 & am looking for the p/n of the power steering filter. I have the p/n of the ABC filter (003-184-61-01) just in case anyone needs it. The best price I've seen online for the ABC Filter is ~ $40. Any idea how much the PS filter cost? Since the ABC & power steering are using the same pump so would it be best to flush both fluids as a preventative maintenance to extend the life of the pump? I've read lots of discussions on the ABC flush but rarely seen anyone mentioned anything about the power steering flush. Should we do both? Thanks for your inputs.

002-184-55-01 is the p/s filter. I paid $7.25 a couple of years ago and $33 for the ABC filter. I'm sure they've gone up in price. And yes, I think it wise to flush the p/s system as all fluids should be kept fresh.

Btw, I'm going to use the same Pentosin CHF 11S fluid for the p/s but I've heard that some of the forum members used the Dexron III. The owner manual is very vague & useless.

I just had my CL in for service yesterday and asked all these questions, and more.

The latest from the tech, who was very well versed in ABC and AMG, said the idea is to monitor the car's behavior, physical exam of the system for leaks, codes, fluid level and condition.

If the car acts normally, throws no codes, and the fluid is not molasses black colored or consistently low, the idea is to change the main ABC filter only say every 4 years. the new filters are 3-4 microns. This is a recommendation, not hard and fast rule as there is no specific maintenance interval.

Flushing is recommended only if a major component has to be replaced. Then you also have to replace the other filter too.

My fluid was olive oil green. I had the main filter changed since I have an 05. it was in good shape. The tech said it could have been left in but I'm a bit **** so I decided to put in a new OEM one.

Good luck.

If you have the 215 CL Petrosin or the MB fluid is the right stuff for the ABC and the P/S. You can get Petrosin 11S from Advance. See my note above before doing the flush.

The correct fluids are outlined, not in the OM but in a Recommended Fluids booklet in the Owners pack. I would check yours before proceeding.

To clarify, my tech said the P/s filter change was REQuIRed if you were doing an (abc) flush that would be indicated by a fault condition.

If you want to change that filter too, no harm no foul. Just make sure you look at the fluid colour and change the filter. The house link is a good one but my tech warned me against a complete immediate flush unless there was a serious problem as Ops have described. No use hitting a hornets nest!

That was exactly my instinct.
