2002 CL500 STOPPED CHANGING GEAR
My car is stuck in 2nd. or 3rd. gear, cannot tell which.
Checked the autobox and found it to be empty of trans. oil.
Can I just fill up and drive away?
If so what is the correct oil?
The leak proved to be the usual problem of failed seals around the electric plug. I found that I could top up the ATF level through the dipstick hole with a couple of litres of Red 134, then the car worked well enough to take in to the local Merc specialist. Repair cost £220. which included ATF and Filter change.
The above was not the only fault as the box stopped auto-changing the next time I got it really warm, then worked again when it cooled. Had to have the gearbox's electric controller circuit board replaced which added another £400 to the bill.
