What kind of tires do you like?

So I need new tires. But I'm not sure what to get. So the a dude at a tire shop told me pilot super sport 3. What's a little confusing are the sizes. Do I get the size on the door stickers or do I get a little bigger?? Do I get one size for the front and a difference size for the rear? Basically, am I sticking with stock or not?
Also what brand of tires do you guys like the best?

Tires

What year is your Cl500?

In 2003 the base CL500 had 225/55HR17 tires front and rear. Wheels were
7.5J x 17", front and rear.

On my 2003 Cl500 with the optional "Sport Package" the tires were:
Front: 245/45 ZR18" front and 265/40ZR18" rear, high performance.
Wheels: Front: AMG 8.5J x 18" ET 44. Rear:AMG 9.0J x 18" ET44.

What tire and wheels are now on your CL500?

I don't remember. But I'll prob go with the more aggressive setup. Mostly because I'd like the most amount of grip as possible. Why did you go with smaller front tires and larger rears?

those are the wrong size tires for the Amg sport package 18 inch wheels

they should be 245/45/18 front and 275/40/18 rear

to answer the original questions about why different sizes front and rear , Mercedes fitted wider rear wheels and also wider rear tires on the sports package and Amg cars . Standard cars have the same size wheels and tires on all 4 corners

as for what brand of tire , I pick a cheaper option than Michelin . I buy general G max , Firestone firehawk Indy, or sumitomo htr Z (all from tirerack.com) and they ship directly to a local installer . Much cheaper then michelin, they are only about $120 a tire and it includes free road hazard coverage

Tusabes, I feel like you're secretly a MB mechanic trying find out how much we know on the forum. I have the amg badging and what looks like amg body kit. So I'm not sure if that's "sport". I will say these tires are huge. Are these the sport wheels? The wheels themselves have the amg etching on them.

Yes you have the Amg sport package 18 inch rims

correct oem size tires for these wheels are 245/45/18 front and 275/40/18 rear .

Many people put on the wrong size tires because smaller sizes are cheaper

If you want lots of grip, I strongly recommend having the larger rear wheels and tires (say 265 or 275 section) at the front as well as at the rear.

https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w...els-tyres.html

I've been doing this for a while on two cars, and it works very well.

If you want a smooth, comfortable ride, best stick to 225 or 245 all round.

Nick

While you guys are here. I recently ordered a crankshaft sensor for fcp euro. I got the "genuine mercedes" and saw a cam position senso. And thought I I'd get it too. For $64. I later realized the cam sensor was a Bosch. And the merc sensor was actually $200. Are Bosch sensors good for these cars or should I always get the merc??

Tire Sizes

2003 CL500:With the "Sport Package CL2. Staggered -width 18" AMG thin-spoke monoblock alloy wheels with high-performance tires. AMG-design sculpted bodywork."

The tire size as stated above is correct for this vehicle. 245/45ZR18 (front) & 265/40 ZR18 (rear).

There is only 1mm difference in diameter with a 245/45, 275/40 set up.

The difference is 9mm if 265/40 is used on the rear.

right , and if you use tires with substantially different diameters , you are more likely to get abs/wheel speed sensor errors, especially as the tires wear out.

245/45/18 front and 275/40/18 rear is the proper size, as the diameters are nearly identical . It also gives you more sidewall protection in the rear

i bought a cl600 where the owner put on incorrect size 245/40/18 front and 265/35/18 rear tires, as these sizes are cheaper . The reduced sidewall resulted in $4000 pothole damage to the wheels . You want as much sidewall protection as possible
