2005 CL 55 AMG

Star software

I ordered the star maintance dvd for my 2005 cl55 amg and it will not play on my computer because the plug in "whip4 " is 32 bit and my computer is 64 bit. Does anyone know of a fix for this? I have tried to call about it but I get lost on the automated mb system.

the star software is not supported on 64 bit os.

remember, the original software comes on a heavy-duty "laptop" with locked-down os.

Install VMware Workstation on your laptop, create a 32-bit Windows virtual machine and install Windows XP or whatever OS SDS (Star Diagnostics) expects.

good luck with getting a vm to sync right and reliably over the serial interface with the car. what you will end up with is one (or more) corrupt ecu in the vehicle.

btw, if you still want to go down that path- there is a free vm software from microsoft. no need for vmware.

lastly, get a $200 laptop and dedicate it to the star software. this is the way it was intended to be run- dont get creative.

if there is a fix for the 64-bit and it works - more power to you... but otherwise i would not experiment.

I was thinking of getting a old laptop with xp service pack 2 instead of going into my new laptop reg. to put a whip4 key in. I think it is just asking for trouble. Plus having a laptop just for the car repair would be convenent. Is star service web based? Do I have to be online for some of the drivers?
