mercedes c3 star diagnostic system
i've seen these advertised with and without hdd. what is hdd and what does it do? also saw mercedes carsoft 7.4 multiplexer pretty cheap goes up to 2004 mercedes anybody have experience with this?

HDD - Hard Disk Drive. You need a HDD :-) Some systems come without so you can use your own pre configured HDD.

It runs as a VM..using VMware Player, at least with SuperMB DAS version.
Makes it nice since it's transportable to another harddrive or OS(Xp, Win7, Win8).
I copied the VM to another harddrive just to keep a backup.

mb star diagnostic software is inside the hdd,generall there are three model: T30 HDD, External hdd, and Dell d630 hdd, you can choose suitable one for you laptop.

Dell 630 and Dell 830?
Dell 630/830 laptops use the same chip set, and have screen sizes (14.1 for the 630 and 15.4 inches for the 830.

Definitely want to buy my own used D830 which is a step up in size and may be less worn out than a Dell 630 sold to me by an SDS vendor who sells the 630 laptop as part of his package.
So, if by chance anyone reading this can advise if they know of any D830 laptops accepting the SDS hard drive and running it successfully, please reply.
I know about the VM options (run on ANY laptop) for the CS4 and so far it appears only the CS4 users are running SDS in a VM with desired results.

I think in principle you can use any laptop with a SATA HDD and a serial port, which isn't very many. The two technologies didn't overlap for very long, though some of ruggedized "Tough Books" seem to stick with them. The D630 is the obvious one to use, but the D830 should be better.
The SDS vendor will have the HDD configured to run windows XP on a D630, so it will have all the drivers for that.
Maybe you can use a D630 HDD in a D830 and change the drivers?
I thought about using a D830 or even an M65, but Chinese SDS seems to be fickle, and given the various problems I read that others had, I thought I'd take the non time-consuming solution.
Of course, if you can get a USB to serial convertor to work reliably with SDS, the world is your oyster, but that seems to be a big "if". The favourite convertors seem to be those that use the FTDI FT232R chipset, like the Z-Tek USB 1.1 to RS232 converter.
