00 clk 320 and 3 hondas. Darn I am down to 4 cars.
They are franchises independently operated. Don't expect quality work from a Maaco. They are bargain, fast turn around, minimal prep paint/repair shops.
If you are lucky and know the manager you can ge a good paint job, but I would definitely not have my Mercedes repaired or repainted at a Maaco.

Thanks for the reply....in all honesty, I'm looking into a franchise of this company. I just wanted the general consensus. Any others with knowledge/personal experiences with this company?

I've used them and Earl Schieb to spray my dune buggy, boat trailers and an old *****'s Jeep over the years. The quality was exactly what I expected for the price....poor. Since all of these things get the crap beat out of them constantly, I figure that I can afford to paint them again. Yes, it is a paint job but the quality is as low as the price. A lot of used car guys located in the lower rent parts of town use them. They'll buy a 10-15 year old car at the auction for $1000, slap a $400 paint job on it and sell it on their lot for about 3x what they've invested. The quality varies from shop to shop and from painter to painter.

Personally, from an ownership perspective, it is too much of a hands on business with a lot of risk for me. Almost every time I went in to get something painted, I was offered a discount for cash and if I would drop it off after hours. Also, they were spraying stuff outside the booth and were not concerned about washing paints and toxics down the drain. When the CARB, WQCB, EPA, etc. come knocking on the door, the owner(s) are in for a rude awakening.

STAY AWAY!!! I took my old Corolla for rust repair and a spray. $650. The rust came back in the same spots, the paint lost it's shine in about 1.5 years and then started to peel. If you want to save money, find a body shop school. a friend hooked me up with a school in Chicago with my Celica GT. Everything was free except for the paint so I blew my wad on some Candy Apple Red Clearcoat and it was sweet until I wrapped it around a pole.

Macco is not the place where you want to bring your Mercedes to. I sent my corolla in for a $300 paintjob and I have to say it came out awesome for that price, people compliment on the paintjob everywhere I go. It was money well spent, but the paintjob does have some flaws which I can careless on my beater car.

I have a friend who runs and owns a maaco shop and he will tell people flat out. If you want a cheap job it will cost x amount of money and if you want it done right its going to cost about double that price. And he is capable of and does do quality work. However, you are taking a risk of getting a sandy paint job if you go to a random maaco.

He can paint your back bumper in an hour for $120 or he can take two days on the job and cost you closer to $400. It all depends. But to say that all maaco shops are the same is wrong. Like you said, they are independently operated. Its up to the owner and his employees to make sure the job gets done right. Just know where your going....

$300 for a full dip is a great price, you couldn't expect more

I wonder if the maaco name would discredit a reputable shop somewhat given that they are known for cheap paint jobs?

Why buy into a franchise anyway? If you produce quality results, word of mouth will be your best marketing tool. I think the overall public is aware of Maaco's reputation of orange peel paint jobs. There is an old guy near my restaurant who's been there for years. A small shop, but he's fantastic. There is literally a two month wait for his services.

One of my friends bought into a Maaco franchise, and I never saw him for two years. Either his help didn't come in, or he was running the sander himself, or a hundred other problems. He said later, when he sold it at a loss, that it ws the worst experience he'd had in his life. Your results may vary... especially since he was trained as a Chiropractor!
Judging from your posts here, you know your way around a shop. If you have the right people around you, it might be worth a shot to open one of your own, not Maaco's...
