2002 CLK55
Sunroof Problem.

My 2002 CLK55's sunshade seems to get stuck about 2 inches before it closes and covers up the sunroof. You can actually hear it grinding against something when you try to close it or open it. It happens about 50% of the time when you open and close the sunshade. Also when the sunroof is completely opened the sunroof imakes some sort of knocking noise when going over bumps. Has anyone experienced the same and can someone shed some light on this before I bring it back into the dealer. Thanks in advance.

I experienced similiar problems w/ my sunroof, however, I didn't hear any grinding noises at all. I would just "Reset" the sunroof by opening it all the way and holding the open button down for another 5 secs. then take the key out, and put it back in , and the sunroof would be able to close all the way.

55Power is talking about the sunSHADE (interior), not the sunROOF (exterior), with respect to the closing issue...

That said, I haven't heard of this issue before and don't have any great ideas...

I have a 2000 clk430 and i have to hold the button the whole way for it to close and for it to open... now... is there a one touch function available for a reasonable cost? or should I have a one touch function and mine may just have gone bad?

I believe that function became available in 2001. You can actually just buy the entire overheard unit with the switches from a 2001 and replace the whole thing and presto, automatic open. I have a 99 and I just bought a newer one on Ebay. It should be here in a couple days. I paid about $50 w/ shipping but I think I've seen them for even less than that.

many thanks chief,

when you say the overhead unit, you mean that entire section where the lighting is housed as well? or the switch and the mechanism behind the switch which controls the sunroof?

I did this mod a while ago to my 2000 CLK430. Works great. Here is a link to the evil site for more info: http:// benzworld . org/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=1232694&posts=8 (NEED TO REMOVE ANY SPACES AND PASTE IN YOUR BROWSER). Here is a pic of the part to replace with the same from a 2001 or 2002 CLK:

Thanks for the quick reply guys but unfortunately I'm only referring to the manually sliding shade portion of the roof. I guess I'll just have to take it into the dealer and get it fixed. I have 750 miles till my factory warranty ends so I guess it's good that this problem happened now. Thanks again.
