Looking for help on purchase

I've decided on the 2000-2002 clk. Are there major differences in these years and what preventative maintenance should I have done from the get go? I've read replacing the o2 sensors with Bosch is good. Anything else? Any advice you guys have would really help. I didn't get much help from the local dealer.

Go with the 01 or 02, and get an extended warrenty. Make sure it has HID headlights and one-touch moonroof reverse.... Other than that you should be good to go.

There are no differences in the model years 01 or 02 so go for one of these.

Get one with decent miles, correct services done and all repair records.

When you buy get the transmission fluid changed I don't buy the lifetime statement on this - cheap insurance.

Thanks so much for the help. I found a clk430 that has amg on the back as well. It looks the same as the clk55. Is that the same as the clk55. Is AMG a package option for the 430 and the clk55 a different car? Based on your suggestions, I've narrowed it down to three cars. Also, are silver and brilliant silver different color options for Mercedes? I'll post the stats on these cars so you guys can provide your opinion on which to get.

1. Visually, they are the same. The real difference lies under the hood. A CLK55 has a 5.5 litre V8, a 430 has the 4.3 litre V8. The 55 is the 'true' AMG vehicle and more of a beast. The one you saw/drove is a 430 badged as 'AMG'. I have the same AMG badge on my trunk (previous owner did it I suppose). I think there was an AMG 'appearance package' but I thought it was only available on 320's but I could be mistaken.

2. Silver for a CLK is 'Brilliant Silver'. There are 2 black colors however. The blue looking black is referred to as 'Black Opal'. The true black is referred to as 'Obsidian Black'.

Hope this helps. Good luck!!!!

I think all later model CLK430s did come with the AMG badge from the factory and yes they look identical.

Wasn't it also available in non-metallic black, paint code 040?

Slight differences for the '02 included a safety feature in the trunk called "Emergency Trunk Release" which illuminates for 30 minutes after the trunk lid is closed.

Also, the 2002 models received different center caps on the wheels (chrome-trimmed) compared to the plain silver painted ones.

Best of luck in your decision.

That is just what I needed. The one I am most interested in is for a 2002 -- $24,500 w/ 46,600 mls. It's in Ohio. Were Xenon lights an option? this one has them? Thanks again for the links and advice. This forum is really helping me make a better decision.

There was no such thing as an AMG option for the 320 or the 430. The 430 came with an AMG body kit and no badge.

There have been many debates about AMG badges on non-AMG cars I don't care it is your car! The car you are looking at probably has an AMG badge only. Some people put AMG wheels with the AMG badge on the car.

The CLK55 (like the CL55) are different cars than the standard models.

My opinion is that they are all nice cars, I use my CLK320 as a daily driver and I really don't need the extra power for that. The suspension setups on the CLKs don't exactly encourage spirited driving in the twisties but that is an easy fix.

I track my P-Cars so I get the high speed driving bug out of me that way (safe and no tickets!).
