Steering wheel vibration

Hi,

I recently purchased a 2002 CLK430. When driving, more noticeable at freeway speeds, the steering wheel start to vibrate. I can feel it and can see it as well. This doesn't seem normal to me and I am not sure what could be broken. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

rn

Possible causes and solutions

-Bent rims (get new ones or get them straightened)

-wheels not properly balanced (go to tire shop and get the balanced)

-Rotors may be warped (check them out and if they are buy new ones and change your pads)

-Need wheel alignment?

-if you have directional tires make sure that they are in agreement with the arrows.

Thats all I can think of of and what is most probable.

I'll get these items looked at this weekend and post the results. Thanks for the reply.

I doubt that....My original 17's were bent on the front and rear of the left side...dealer tried to balance it the best that they could...anyhow, bought 4 brand new original AMG 18" monoblock aero II's from the dealer with Conti Sport Contact 2 tires on them ...still get the same vibration to this day ...im so pissed off but I guess its ok since I got new rims.

Right now when it's cold in the mornings I do get a vibation between 35-42mph...I don't know if anyone else has this...Get this, add to that the original vibration between 55-70mph and you get 2 strikes...lol...past 75-155mph, there's no vibrations at all...weird!

There is a thread somewhere here about Chappy trying to install ceramic control arm bushings..apparently, those bushings from the control arms are the root cause of the aforementioned vibration...I've yet to try this but for the mean time, I can live with it...

Keep me posted if you have changes...thanks

Oh ya...my steering wheel before did not vibrate but it shook like it was loose or something...I changed my steering wheel to a wood one and I torqued(spelling?) it to the tightest that I could with a help from a friend countering the force...

After installing it, shaking is gone! I think my bolt on the steering wheel was loose...might want to check that out..fyi

Had the same problem before, had my rear tires changed and balanced, fixed the problem.

Get them checked out.

I have the same problem but only when the engine is a bit cold, at speed of 20-30 mph. It usually goes away when its a its normal running temperture. I first thought it was the rims or tires I had, but then I got my 19's and still had that slight vibration when not at normal running tempertur. I am thinking of replacing the steering damper shock. I heard that helps and/or is the culprit

I have received the bushings, but they are polyurethane, not ceramic. They will be installed next week.

I've had the dreaded 60mph shimmy (varying strength) since the car was new. 17s or 18...didn't matter, but I am super-picky! I'm hopeful these bushings will cure the vibration.

I recently purchased a brand new set of 17 x 7.5 AMG Monoblock wheels with Hankook tires. After a few days, I noticed a vibration in the steering wheel and the seat especially when I first start the car up. The vibration seems to get stronger when I am making turns but goes away around 80 mph. I brought the car to get the wheels balanced and still have the same issue. Any ideas if this is just a problem with these style wheels? I did not have the problem with the stock rims

When you say start the car up, the car is still stationary??? If so your motor mounts may be shot and could be complete coincidence that it happend a little after the wheel install.

Did you get them road force balanced on a Hunter?

Either they're out of balance, you have a bent wheel or the tires are bad.
