Convertible top stops half way

Recently, my 99 clk 320 cab has been stopping half way when I try to put the top down. I hear a click and it just stops. If I turn the car off and restart then it will enventually finish. Sometimes I have to stop and start 3 times to finish. No issues though bringing the top up. Any help is appreciated.

Mine does the same thing, its been stored through the winter and it was the first time i opened it since last year, i pushed it and then it finished the cycle so when i have time to check it i think its going to lead me to hydraulic fluid in the trunk on the driver side pull your carpet up, i think thats where it is.

Already took the rear apart. At initial assessment, the wires all looked fine and the hydraulic fluid was between the min and max lines.

Aw man. Somebody else had that problem on here. I don't have to time to search around for it right now. I will and see if I can find it tomorrow. Turned out to be some 'exposed' wiring or something like that.

Black 00 Cab here....

OK, here it is:
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w208...2C+convertible

It's over on the 'other' forum. I strongly suggest reading. 2 guys have repaired their soft tops on their own. Palm Tree Mechanic also posted pics. The fluid resevoir location is shown on one of the pics. The culprits were a broken wire, the other was a bad wiring harness. BOTH issues were found under the decklid in an area that apparently is suspectible to bad wiring (maybe the opening and closing of the top contribute to the bad wiring).
Hope this helps!

I had the same problem once. and just to get it down i had to manually lower the soft top. it is actually not a big problem. So try this. Under the trunk there is a screw located behind the back seets, loosen that screw ( oil preasure or something) and the close it back up again. see if that works.

I could have written this same post. I narrowed it down to the bow lock not working correctly. The lock has to be in the open position for the top to raise or lower and it wasn't switching correctly.

I ended up taking it to the dealer and he has ordered a switch to correct the problem. It is due to come in today and if it is corrected I'll let you all know the outcome.

The other posts, with photos, was very informative, by the way, and it pays to read up on this. Everyone should be able to quickly raise the top manually, if necessary.

is the bow lock the one under the lid with the two plastic air lines attached?

i went to put down the top yesterday and after the soft top was safely stowed away the rear deck lid stopped closing, i tried to manally close it and it would not latch, after manually sliding the lock i was able to physically close and latch it.

now for my good luck to click in, i had the top down again this morning, when closing it the same thing happened the rear truck lid wouldnt close. the rear half of the soft top had not yet "curled" up to allow the rear lid to close so i lifted it up and tried to close the lid manually. it must have unclicked because i had to push the soft top into the latch below the rear window and it got stuck mid way. after some gentle hacking with a screw driver to make the lock pull the top closer down i tried to use the conv switch to finish the motion didnt happen, i pushed the headrest button down and the lock grabbed and shut. Now the top is no longer functional. Outstanding.

[QUOTE=Hitman0187;2139199]is the bow lock the one under the lid with the two plastic air lines attached?/QUOTE]

That's it. Mine was broken internally. The latch has to be open for the top to work up or down. When you open the latch opens for the bow to come up. The left switch activates it to stay open. Mine was closing, the latch was broken internally and had to be replaced.

The left swith is $75 wholesale(internet) $98 list. The latch is $350 wholesale(internet), $450 list. To change it out, you have to be able to plug the hydraulic hoses (mb plugs or golf tees).

somehow using the rear headrest button must do something to the lock position because i can lower the top that way. to put it back up it gets to where the rear window curls up to allow the deck lid to close at that point it will move 3 or 4 inches before a clunk is heard and then the top becomes non responsive to anything and i must manually close the deck lid and use the headrest down to get the lid to lock and close.

i am going to investigate the lock switch again tomorrow... if it stops raining
