Can Our Steering Get Better By Replacing The DAmpner

I know that our steering will never feel the same as a BMW's tightness but I purchased this Seering Dampner and I will be installing it this week and I'm wondering if it will make a difference since my car is getting old.

What do you think?

Check out the link to the part.

Couldn't hurt, but you should also look at the other things like - tires may need to re-balanced, power steering fluid, or the alignment maybe out...

I replaced mine with that same one. I noticed that the stearing was about the same. It did make a differance when I was turning the wheel all the way to park or something.

The damper made a big difference in the turning "feel" or the wheel. Mine was much smoother and linear. In terms of steering "tightness", if your CLK doesnt feel tight I would suspect something else might be wrong with the steering gear. Tierods? Centerlink? Ball Joints? The steering in my CLk is pretty tight...similar but much heavier than my sister's 328ci.

I just don't want the Cadillac softness on my car that looks sporty and handles well....the soft steering kills it for me....but I guess that's what I get for buying a Mercedes. Our steering will never feel like a BMW's....We'll see what happens after the install, I'm sure there will be no change in the Cadillac feel.

Haha, well I wouldnt really describe our cars as driving like a Cadillac... I dont think any Cadillac is this sweet. If your steering gear is in perfect shape, then there's not much you can do to make anything tighter.

I wish there was some sort of bolt that could be tightened somewhere to make our steering feel really tight.

I think there might be a way of adjusting the steering gearbox to make it a lil tighter, but I am not sure about it. Im gonna look into that and ill let you know if I find out anything. I heard that you can put thicker power streering fluid to tighten it, but I think its a bunch of crap.

i def. feel ya. our cars (benz) werent made for performance. its all for looks and luxury. my buddy has a 03 bmw 330 and dam can u feel the difference. a bimmer is def. my next car. so this clk will be my looker, and my m3 will be both my looker and performer. still not as sexy as the 208 but def. sportier

Replace the Steering Damper

If you want performance, get the AMG version which is significantly different in suspension (shocks, springs, bushings, sway bars) and brakes. As for the steering damper, mine was shot at 50,000 miles (wasn't retracting at all) and made a noticable difference when replaced. For $34.00 and 5 minutes for a mechanic to install (one bolt), it is well worth the price. There are several posts on the W208/209 AMG forum regarding this issue. In MHO this is a must.

Note, if you are looking to buy the part it is called a "Steering Damper." Good luck.

I already have it in hand...I'm just waiting for my breaks to come in the mail so I can get it all done this Friday.

Get a set of Eibach sway bars... That should give you the feel you're looking for!!
